Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of a Newspaper Man The word "reporter" means a good deal more than it used to mean, for nowadays, on a popular and successful paper, the reporter is not just a man who takes down speeches in shorthand. He is a diplomat, business organiser, detective, man of affairs, politician, all rolled into one. Ready must be his tongue; quick his decision. He must be prepared to take chances, and take them quickly. He must know how not to be brow-beaten by those in high places. The exchanges of the dog fancier in the East End must find him with the same acquainted mind as the conversation of the peeress's guests assembled for a Tariff Reform afternoon in a Belgrave Square drawing-room. Book excerpt: Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Rome, Tom Rachman's wry, vibrant debut follows the topsy-turvy private lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an international English language newspaper as they struggle to keep it - and themselves - afloat. Fifty years and many changes have ensued since the paper was founded by an enigmatic millionaire, and now, amid the stained carpeting and dingy office furniture, the staff's personal dramas seem far more important than the daily headlines. Kathleen, the imperious editor in chief, is smarting from a betrayal in her open marriage; Arthur, the lazy obituary writer, is transformed by a personal tragedy; Abby, the embattled financial officer, discovers that her job cuts and her love life are intertwined in a most unexpected way. Out in the field, a veteran Paris freelancer goes to desperate lengths for his next byline, while the new Cairo stringer is mercilessly manipulated by an outrageous war correspondent with an outsize ego. And in the shadows is the isolated young publisher who pays more attention to his prized basset hound, Schopenhauer, than to the fate of his family's quirky newspaper. As the era of print news gives way to the Internet age and this imperfect crew stumbles toward an uncertain future, the paper's rich history is revealed, including the surprising truth about its founder's intentions. Spirited, moving, and highly original, The Imperfectionists will establish Tom Rachman as one of our most perceptive, assured literary talents.

It was evening, and Jimmie Dale sat at a small table in the corner of the St. James Club dining room. Opposite him sat Herman Carruthers, a young man of his own age, about twenty-six, a leading figure in the newspaper world, whose rise from reporter to managing editor of the morning News Argus within the short space of a few years had been almost meteoric. They were at coffee and cigars, and Jimmie Dale was leaning back in his chair, his dark eyes fixed interestedly on his guest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Reading We have been hearing for a long time about the great Ameri can novel. Its coming has been heralded time and again by false prophets. It has become as cheap as a chewing gum ad, and as mythical as the forgotten verses of the Star-spangled Banner. But it remained for Clyde Brion Davis to use the catchphrase as an ironical title for a novel, and thus to double that irony back upon himself by almost succeeding in doing the thing he halfway mocked. For his The Great American Novel is as rich a cyclo rama Of American life for the late nineties and early nineteen hundreds as we have had in many a year. Rich is the first word that comes to mind, and yet it is a richness carefully disciplined, well-controlled within a difficult self-imposed pattern. The author has set himself the task of writing throughout like a mediocre newspaper man who never found time to write the novel he intended. Yet within this pattern he succeeds in giving such a history as only a newspaper man could write. One who has lived through this period reads it with a pleasure Similar to that evoked by looking through an Old kodak album, or by read ing Frederick Lewis Allen's Only Yesterday. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.

Johnny learns of a damaged plane abandoned in the desert on the Mexican side of the border, and comes up with a plan to put it to work. His affairs are being monitored by Mary V, the ranch owner's spunky daughter, who is slowly taking interest in Johnny. But in the meantime, a gang of rustlers are taking advantage of his passion for flying in order to distract him from his job of keeping an eye over the ranch's horses. The Thunder Bird is a sequel of Johnny Jewel's story and it looks like our heroes didn't learn their lessons, as Johnny seems more stubborn and Mary V more spoiled. Johnny is determined to pay his debt before going back to the ranch and to Mary V, but this time his affairs take a foray into an international intrigue. Bertha Muzzy Bower (1871-1940) was an American author who wrote novels and short stories about the American Old West. She is best known for her first novel "Chip of the Flying U" about Flying U Ranch and the "Happy Family" of cowboys who lived there. The novel rocketed Bower to fame, and she wrote an entire series of novels set at the Flying U Ranch. Several of Bower's novels were turned into films.
