Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" is the very last Sherlock Holmes story. This ultimate investigation takes him to Berkshire, to a racing stable called Shoscombe Old Place. It’s the head trainer, John Mason, who has asked for Holmes’ help, although he is not sure exactly what he wants him to investigate. All he knows is that strange things have been happening. The owner of the stables, Lady Beatrice Falder, has suddenly stopped coming to greet her favourite horse. Sir Robert, her brother, has been looking very strange of late. Furthermore, he has given his sister’s dog away and has been seen at night meeting an unknown man in the old crypt. And human bones have been found in the furnace. This is enough to spark Holmes curiosity and he takes on the case. "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" is part of "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

Book excerpt: Since his first appearance in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes has been one of the most beloved fictional characters ever created. Now, in two paperback volumes, Bantam presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyle’s classic hero--a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmes’s adventures in crime! Volume II begins with The Hound of the Baskervilles, a haunting novel of murder on eerie Grimpen Moor, which has rightly earned its reputation as the finest murder mystery ever written. The Valley of Fear matches Holmes against his archenemy, the master of imaginative crime, Professor Moriarty. In addition, the loyal Dr. Watson has faithfully recorded Holmes’s feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the thrilling The Adventure of the Red Circle and the twelve baffling adventures from The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle’s incomparable tales bring to life a Victorian England of horse-drawn cabs, fogs, and the famous lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where for more than forty years Sherlock Holmes earned his undisputed reputation as the greatest fictional detective of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1927, collects the final set of Sherlock Holmes stories authored by Arthur Conan Doyle. All of the included stories appeared previously in The Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. As usual, the mysteries generally purport to be accounts written by Holmes’s friend Dr. John Watson. Uniquely, however, three stories in the Casebook are presented from alternative points of view: “The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone” is narrated in the third person, since it was adapted from a stage play in which Watson hardly appeared; and “The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier” and “The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane” are both narrated by Holmes himself, the latter being set after his retirement as a detective. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The first solo transatlantic flight. The release of the first talking picture. The invention of the jukebox. These are just a handful of milestones that occurred in one momentous year. In a decade of historic firsts, 1927 stands out as the peak year of the Roaring Twenties, a span of time in which dozens of significant events took place—in America and around the world. The economy was booming, the Jazz Age was in full swing, social mores were looser than ever, and the nation was celebrating new dances, gadgets, and heroes. In sports, records were broken, and several champions in different fields thrilled fans with outstanding feats. In 1927: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of the Jazz Age’s Greatest Year, Thomas S. Hischak provides a daily account of this pivotal period in history. Every major news story—on the national and international stage—is accounted for, from popular culture phenomena to minor news items that would prove to be more important later. In addition to Charles Lindbergh’s historic flight, the book recounts such events as the discovery of the Peking Man, the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti, the Shanghai Massacre, the Great Mississippi River Flood, and the advent of talking pictures with the arrival of The Jazz Singer. From the world of entertainment—the debut of the classic musical Show Boat and the formation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—to headlines that gripped the country, this book focuses on a diverse and complicated year. Scattered throughout the book are interesting statistics and pieces of information regarding life during this era. Highlighting the people, inventions, discoveries, and milestones that made these twelve months so special, 1927 will appeal to armchair historians everywhere.
