Researchers and engineers in the fuel cell industry will find this book a valuable resource, as will students of electrochemical engineering and catalyst synthesis.
Book Synopsis Interfacial Electrochemistry by : Wolfgang Schmickler
Download or read book Interfacial Electrochemistry written by Wolfgang Schmickler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemistry is an old branch of physical chemistry. Due to the development of surface sensitive techniques, and a technological interest in fuel cells and batteries, it has recently undergone a rapid development. This textbook treats the field from a modern, atomistic point of view while integrating the older, macroscopic concepts. The increasing role of theory is reflected in the presentation of the basic ideas in a way that should appeal to experimentalists and theorists alike. Special care is taken to make the subject comprehensible to scientists from neighboring disciplines, especially from surface science. The book is suitable for an advanced course at the master or Ph.D. level, but should also be useful for practicing electrochemists, as well as to any scientist who wants to understand modern electrochemistry.

Book Synopsis Study of the Kinetics of the Reaction Between Uranium, H2, HD and D2 by : Harry John Svec
Download or read book Study of the Kinetics of the Reaction Between Uranium, H2, HD and D2 written by Harry John Svec and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of the reactions between uranium metal, H2, HD and D2 have been examined. There is strong evidence that the reaction involves several steps of which activated adsorption of the gas by the metal is the rate governing process. Rate constants have been determined for the over-all processes in the temperature range 27.5 deg to 75 deg C. Energies of activation which are of reasonable magnitude have been calculated being 10,200 calories for the process involving D2, 8,500 calories for the process involving HD and 8,200 calories for the process involving H2. From a consideration of the zero point energies for these three molecular species of hydrogen, these results follow in the right order. However because of the adsorption step and since it is not possible to determine the heat of adsorption it is impossible to state that the observed activation energies are the true activation energies. Since the heat of adsorption during the process must be considered in the final interpretation of the results, the true activation energies are probably less positive than those observed. The adsorption step in the processes also accounts for the fact that the ratios of the rates of the reactions, which may be expected to differ inversely as the square roots of the reduced masses of the gas molecules, deviate somewhat from the theoretical values. Heterogeneous reactions such as those reported by this thesis do not lend themselves readily to kinetics experiments. Because of the reactivity of the uranium-hydrogen system it was not possible to determine to what extent the heat of adsorption enters into the values obtained for the observed activation energies. However other metal-hydrogen systems which do not interact so rapidly should better lend themselves to studies of this nature.

Book Synopsis Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces by : Richard I. Masel
Download or read book Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces written by Richard I. Masel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-03-22 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces As with other books in the field, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces describes what occurs when gases come in contact with various solid surfaces. But, unlike all the others, it also explains why. While the theory of surface reactions is still under active development, the approach Dr. Richard Masel takes in this book is to outline general principles derived from thermodynamics and reaction rate theory that can be applied to reactions on surfaces, and to indicate ways in which these principles may be applied. The book also provides a comprehensive treatment of the latest quantitative surface modeling techniques with numerous examples of their use in the fields of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and materials science. A valuable working resource and an excellent graduate-level text, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides readers with: * A detailed look at the latest advances in understanding and quantifying reactions on surfaces * In-depth reviews of all crucial background material * 40 solved examples illustrating how the methods apply to catalysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrochemistry, and more * 340 problems and practice exercises * Sample computer programs * Universal plots of many key quantities * Detailed, class-tested derivations to help clarify key results The recent development of quantitative techniques for modeling surface reactions has led to a number of exciting breakthroughs in our understanding of what happens when gases come in contact with solid surfaces. While many books have appeared describing various experimental modeling techniques and the results obtained through their application, until now, there has been no single-volume reference devoted to the fundamental principles governing the processes observed. The first book to focus on governing principles rather than experimental techniques or specific results, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides students and professionals with a quantitative treatment of the application of principles derived from the fields of thermodynamics and reaction rate theory to the investigation of gas adsorption and reaction on solid surfaces. Writing for a broad-based audience including, among others, chemical engineers, chemists, and materials scientists, Dr. Richard I. Masel deftly balances basic background in areas such as statistical mechanics and kinetics with more advanced applications in specialized areas. Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces was also designed to provide readers an opportunity to quickly familiarize themselves with all of the important quantitative surface modeling techniques now in use. To that end, the author has included all of the key equations involved as well as numerous real-world illustrations and solved examples that help to illustrate how the equations can be applied. He has also provided computer programs along with universal plots that make it easy for readers to apply results to their own problems with little computational effort. Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces is a valuable working resource for chemical engineers, physical chemists, and materials scientists, and an excellent text for graduate students in those disciplines.

Book Synopsis Surface and Defect Properties of Solids by : M. W. Roberts
Download or read book Surface and Defect Properties of Solids written by M. W. Roberts and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 1973 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
