Book excerpt: The adiabatic elastic moduli at 25 deg C for single crystal alpha-uranium are reported here as derived from measurements of high-frequency ultrasonic wave velocities. A detailed description is given of the specimens used, and of the technique employed for obtaining small plates of proper orientation suitable for the problem. Although the specimens were small, the technique of measurement produced results of relatively good precision, as evidenced by the numerous cross checks obtained. Best values of the moduli and the estimated probable errors are given.

Book excerpt: The 9 single-crystal elastic moduli pertaining to principal crystallographic axes of alpha U at 25 deg C were determined from measurements of high-frequency wave velocities for 21 modes in seven single-crystal specimens, using the phase-comparison method of McSkimin. From the results the elastic compliances, compressibilities, and Poisson"s ratios were computed for the principal axes. Th variations with crystal direction of the stiffness moduli, Young's moduli, and rigidity moduli were plotted. The nature of the anisotropy for the different moduli indicated that the nearest neighbor interatomic bonds are considerably stiffer than the next nearest bonds, which are only slightly larger in interatomic distance. Book excerpt: The unusual temperature dependence of the elastic moduli and other physical properties of alpha uranium near 43 deg K which have been previously reported to be correlated with changes in atomic position and with cell dimensions. The atom position parameter, y, decreases to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly rises on further cooling, as shown both by x-ray and neutron data. The asub>0 and bsub>0 cell dimensions decrease to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly increase, giving a large negative linear expansion coefficient in the range 43 to 18 deg K; the c0 dimension contracts on cooling to 43 deg K and decreases even more rapidly below this temperature thus giving a higher positive linear expansion coefficient in the 43 to 18 deg K range. Neutron diffraction experiments disclose the existence of additional reflections at the lower temperatures which are presumably due to a magnetic moment arrangement.
