Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the effects of different durations of stretching on balance. Female subjects (n=23) had their balance assessed before and after two stretching interventions and a control condition on three separate days, at least 48 hours apart. The quadriceps, hamstrings, and plantar flexors were stretched after a warm-up and repeated three times. In one stretching protocol, the positions were maintained for 45 seconds, while in the other stretching protocol, the positions were held for 15 seconds. The 15- second condition produced a significant improvement in the OSI scores (p

Book excerpt: Stretching is a fundamentally important part of sport and exercise, playing a role in improving performance, and preventing injury and rehabilitation, but its scientific underpinnings have, to this point, been overlooked in book publishing. The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of stretching, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. Placing stretching in the context of both health and performance, the first section of the book sets out the science behind stretching, critically assessing the benefits, disadvantages, and roles of different types of stretching, exploring the mechanisms behind increasing range-of-movement through stretching and other methods, and offering evidence-based guidance on building stretching into warm-ups. In its second section, the book provides a step-by-step guide to static, dynamic, and PRF stretching exercises for beginners, through recreational athletes, to elite performers. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific enquiry into stretching, and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

Book excerpt: The evidence for performance decrements with prolonged static stretching (SS)(>60s per muscle group) has led to a paradigm shift in optimal stretching routines within a full warm-up protocol. Many athletic teams and individuals have now incorporated dynamic stretching (DS) and dynamic activity (DA) rather than SS into their pre-exercise warm-up routines. However, much of the previous research examining SS did not incorporate all three components of a full warm-up protocol (aerobic, SS and DS/DA activity). Based on previous literature, the objective of the present study was to compare differing durations of SS (30, 60, and 120 seconds per muscle group or a control condition with no SS) within in a full warm-up protocol on various testing measures. Sixteen male participants (Sixteen males; 27.6 ± 2.15 years, 187.1 ± 15.3 lb. and 181.9 ± cm) with an athletic background and at least 2 years of strength and endurance training experience completed four conditions, each condition included a prior submaximal 5-minute aerobic warm-up on a cycle ergometer, one of the four SS interventions (0, 30, 60 or 120s per muscle group) and a subsequent DS/DA component. Results of the present study serve as evidence that prolonged durations of SS (SS 120s) per muscle group, even with the inclusion of a DS/DA component can impair subsequent performance in vertical jump height, force production and rate of force production, evoked contractile properties and potentiated twitch forces, and the interpolated twitch technique. Results also show that ROM continues to increase immediately following each of the three components within the warm-up (aerobic, SS and DS/DA) in all conditions.

Book excerpt: The optimal duration of an acute static stretch of the hamstring muscles to improve knee extension ROM has not been determined and not many studies, to my knowledge, have tested the acute effects of a single bout of static stretch for longer durations greater than 60 seconds in older adults while also testing their physical function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a single bout of "low intensity" static stretching of the hamstring muscle for 0, 30, 60, 120 seconds to determine which duration of stretching will produce and maintain the greatest gains in knee ROM. Nineteen participants aged 55-80 years were volunteered for the study. Results of the study showed that a longer duration stretch of 60-120-seconds was more effective in producing acute gains in knee ROM than a shorter duration of 30 seconds within the older adults.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to examine the acute effects of antagonist static stretching on vertical jump performance. Resistance trained males (N 31) participated in the study. Each subject performed four trials during each of static squat and countermovement (CMJ) vertical jumps during each session in this repeated measures design. Subjects jumped before treatment, immediately after treatment, at 5 mm post-treatment, and at 15 mm post- treatment. Subjects performed two sessions of testing, one featuring a static stretching treatment where the antagonist muscles for the vertical jump were stretched, the other a control. A significant (p .05) main effect was found for time, where all vertical jumps performed immediately after treatment and at 15 mm post-treatment were significantly (p

Book excerpt: In this manuscript, practitioners and students who are concerned with sports and rehabilitation medicine, kinesiology, as well as coaches and athletes, are introduced to numerous concepts, including mechanotransduction, inflammation, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, calpains, the extracellular matrix, neutrophils and macrophages, and their relevance to stretching, particularly stretching intensity. Although the quantitative parameters of training, duration, and frequency are important, it is the qualitative criterion of intensity (“how much”) that the author suggests is ultimately of greater concern. Intensity, the rate and magnitude of force, may be responsible for the proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation of the musculoskeletal tissues from training, competition, or rehabilitation from injuries. Research suggests that too much force results in the stimulation of an inflammatory response, one associated with a biochemical feedback emerging from a mechanical stimulus. The intent of this manuscript is twofold: to initiate the discussion of the importance of stretching intensity with regard to proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation, and to suggest that researchers need to explore its potential role in addressing numerous inflammatory (RA) and non-inflammatory (OA, recurrent tendinitis etc.) musculoskeletal conditions as well.

Book excerpt: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the acute effects of static stretch and its durational (15s, 30s, 45s, and 60 seconds) effect on strength and power output activities by vertical jump and broad jump tests and on local muscle endurance by leg press (until failure) test. SUBJECTS: Total twelve (n=12; male-9, female-3) (mean age 25 ± 2.52 years) healthy, untrained, recreationally active students volunteered to participate in this study. STUDY DESIGN: All individuals visited the laboratory for seven times, and all these visits were separated with a minimum gap of one week. After a brief orientation of all testing procedures in first three visits, their 1 RM and baseline measurements were conducted for vertical jump, broad jump, and leg press tests. For leg press test (until failure) 60% of the measured 1 RM was used to measure local muscle endurance. On following visits, using a Latin square randomized procedure, one of the static stretch durational protocols was performed prior to the test. The static stretch consisted of four different exercises. MEASUREMENT: After each duration (15s, 30s, 45s, and 60 seconds) of static stretch, subjects performed the vertical jump, broad jump, and leg press test. RESULTS: Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics and the dependent sample t test which revealed that there was no statistically significant (p

Book excerpt: Stretching routines are routinely integrated into the rehabilitation programs of injuries requiring immobilization. Static stretching has been promoted as the safest, most effective, and most comfortable method of stretching whereas the diametric opposite ballistic technique has been essentially shunned by the rehabilitation community due to its' correlated risk of injury and patient discomfort. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the kinematics and levels of perceived soreness associated with static and ballistic hamstring stretching to compare for any differences in benefits or drawbacks between the techniques. While both STA and BAL methods of stretching did create gains in forward movement similarly, STA stretching was found to cause significantly more discomfort than BAL stretching, and thus contraindications towards ballistic stretching may be unjustified. Future research should examine these variables controlling for additional and accessory motions as well as examining the kinematics of the actual BAL and STA stretching maneuvers.

At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.
