For three weeks students were asked to read a graphic novel (experimental group); the other half of the students were asked to study vocabulary as flashcards (control group). To assess their vocabulary knowledge before the experiment took place the students were tested on their existing knowledge. After three weeks the students had to take an immediate posttest that asked for the same vocabulary as the pretest. Forty frequently used German words represented the vocabulary that the participants were tested on. These words also appeared frequently in the graphic novel that the students had to read: Game of Thrones – Das Lied von Eis und Feuer. By comparing the pre- and immediate posttest results, this research study aimed at showing whether incidental vocabulary acquisition takes place through reading. The results, however, did not suggest that reading a graphic novel had a sustainable impact on incidental vocabulary acquisition. The study’s control group scored much better in their posttests than the experimental group. This implied that the former had gained new words and improved their existing vocabulary knowledge. Conversely, the experimental group scored worse indicating that they had acquired less new words. Albeit these findings one should not deduce that studying flashcards is more effective, because the control group’s approach was considered to be an intentional and conscious vocabulary learning process not an incidental vocabulary acquisition.

Corpus-based research has had an increasing influence on language teaching pedagogy, with regard to linguistic content as well as to teaching methodology. While the majority of studies reporting on corpus-based teaching approaches refer to English, only a small number of studies have discussed such an approach for German. In this study, the exploitation of language corpora is proposed in order to arrive at authentic teaching materials which facilitate the comprehension of German modal particles, which pose numerous problems for learners of German as a foreign language. The approach is twofold: first, the frequency of those word forms which may function as modal particles is established. Secondly, concordance data of the more frequently occurring particles are analysed qualitatively. Teaching materials based on these analyses are developed referring to patterns of use which can be relayed to language learners in order to provide them with tools for the decoding of particle meaning."

In the introduction, the main idea and approach of the work is presented. The guiding question is: Are current research results used in schools and if so, how? For this purpose, the two leading textbooks in Germany are examined against previously established principles of second language acquisition. The base text for establishing these principles is "Principles of Instructed Language Learning" by Ellis Rod (2005). Following the introduction, the textbooks "Green Line" and "English G 21" are briefly introduced, and their selection is explained. In both cases, the fifth grade editions are analyzed due to these grades being at the beginning of their learning and because many of the principles established contain a special focus on this phase of learning. Furthermore, the curriculum itself is also considered, as it has a significant influence on the content of the textbooks. The second chapter then deals with the establishment of the principles. Based on Ellis' text, current research findings that are directly related to language teaching are summarized and with its help, implementation possibilities are suggested. These implementation possibilities, in turn, form the basis of the analysis of the textbooks.
