Book excerpt: The U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1976, which is a revision of the U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1962, was generated under the impetus of increased knowledge of the upper atmosphere obtained over the past solar cycle. Above 50 km, this Standard is based on extensive new rocket data and theory for the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, and on the vast resources of satellite data for the thermosphere acquired over more than one complete solar cycle. This Standard is identical with the ICAO Standard (1964) up to 32 km and the ISO standard (1973) to 50 km. Part 1 gives the basis for computation of the main tables of atmospheric properties, including values of physical constants, conversion factors, and definitions of derived properties. Part 2 describes the model and data used up to 85 km, in the first section; and the model and data used above 85 km, in the second section. The theoretical basis of the high- altitude model is given in an appendix. Part 3 contains information on minor constituents in the troposphere, stratosphers, and mesosphere. The main tables of atmospheric properties to 1000 km are given in Part 4. The international system of metric units is used. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report provides descriptions of environmental models used in the near-earth environment for the analysis of earth-based and satellite data. Included are models of the ionosphere, atmosphere, radiation belt, Earth's magnetic field, and orbital prediction. These models are used at PL for a variety of purposes, in particular, for the analysis of experimental data obtained from ground based instruments and, where applicable, instruments carried on balloons, rockets, and satellites. Some of the models described here were developed at PL based upon such measurements. For many of the models described here, computer output is provided together with estimates of computer (CPU) times required to generate such output. The computer codes (subroutines) for these models are frequently incorporated into programs used for data analysis and reduction, as well as mission planning. It is hoped that this report will serve as a useful reference for planning such future missions.

Book excerpt: This book offers a unified presentation that does not discriminate between atmospheric and space flight. It demonstrates that the two disciplines have evolved from the same set of physical principles and introduces a broad range of critical concepts in an accessible, yet mathematically rigorous presentation. The book presents many MATLAB and Simulink-based numerical examples and real-world simulations. Replete with illustrations, end-of-chapter exercises, and selected solutions, the work is primarily useful as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate-level students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first principles scientific model for predicting the spectral radiance from the auroral thermosphere seen by an earthlimb observer is described. This model, and the resulting Auroral Atmospheric Radiance Code (AARC), describe the energy deposition in the thermosphere by primary auroral electrons and the ensuing effects. The latter include electron production and production of nonequilibrium concentrations of vibrationally and electronically excited states, by photochemical means, and by energy transfer. Relaxation of the states by collisions and radiation is described, and the transmission of the infrared radiation emitted from these states is treated. Currently, the model considers four radiators: the nitric oxide vibrational fundamental and first overtone at 2.8 and 5.3 micro the NO+ fundamental at 4.3 mirco, and the CO2 asymmetric- stretch (NU -3 mode) emission at 4.3 micro. The prompt optically optically thin emitters (NO and NO+) are treated in terms of stored, precalculated tables of efficiencies (photons per ion-pair).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material.
