In addition to archaeologists, this volume will appeal to military history specialists and other historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal breaches are usually not a good thing. Evaran and the gang deal with an event that changes Earth’s history. While investigating it, they come across the mention of a cosmic artifact. No one seems to know where it is or what it does other than it existed at one point. One problem is that the cosmic artifact has been linked to the Gothlics, a brutal group that delights in torturing and killing anything they can get their hands on. They appear and mutilate everything, then disappear without a trace. Another issue is that something has punched a hole in the universe. The Eight, a group of Palisin energy beings who oversee a federation with over a million civilizations, offer Murukhan, a half-Palisin alien, and his team the chance to join up with the gang to stop the Gothlics’ threat and find the cosmic artifact.

Book Synopsis Novel Into Film by : Patricia J. Santoro
Download or read book Novel Into Film written by Patricia J. Santoro and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States has come to know Spain, its people, and its land through its literature and, more recently, through the international distribution of many of its films. This analysis aims to probe the creative Spanish soul in greater depth through the particular prism of the cinematic adaptation." "The analysis of the Spanish novels La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes and their cinematic adaptations Pascual Duarte (1975) and Los santos inocentes (1984) is based on the intersection of literary and cinematic theory." "The first chapter of this study summarizes various theories whose integration forms a basis for the analysis of the cinematic adaptation. Structuralism, semiotics, deconstruction, reader criticism, and Freudian/Lacanian psychology serve both film and literary criticism in their analysis of texts. The theories examined in this chapter are inflected in later chapters into the criticism and analysis of the novels and films in question." "The second chapter provides general background information on agrarian Spain - the historical, economic, and ideological context of both La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes. While in most cases the texts refer only obliquely to the reigning ideology that is responsible for the plight of the rural worker, the history of the province of Extremadura, where rural poverty is and was a social and economic phenomenon, is crucial to the understanding of all four texts whose stories are set in this province."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Common Value Auctions and the Winner's Curse by : John H. Kagel
Download or read book Common Value Auctions and the Winner's Curse written by John H. Kagel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable account of how auctions work—and how to make them work Few forms of market exchange intrigue economists as do auctions, whose theoretical and practical implications are enormous. John Kagel and Dan Levin, complementing their own distinguished research with papers written with other specialists, provide a new focus on common value auctions and the "winner's curse." In such auctions the value of each item is about the same to all bidders, but different bidders have different information about the underlying value. Virtually all auctions have a common value element; among the burgeoning modern-day examples are those organized by Internet companies such as eBay. Winners end up cursing when they realize that they won because their estimates were overly optimistic, which led them to bid too much and lose money as a result. The authors first unveil a fresh survey of experimental data on the winner's curse. Melding theory with the econometric analysis of field data, they assess the design of government auctions, such as the spectrum rights (air wave) auctions that continue to be conducted around the world. The remaining chapters gauge the impact on sellers' revenue of the type of auction used and of inside information, show how bidders learn to avoid the winner's curse, and present comparisons of sophisticated bidders with college sophomores, the usual guinea pigs used in laboratory experiments. Appendixes refine theoretical arguments and, in some cases, present entirely new data. This book is an invaluable, impeccably up-to-date resource on how auctions work--and how to make them work.
