Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With obscure terms like 'emphyteusis' and 'jactitation,' the language of Louisianais civil law can sometimes be confusing for students and even for seasoned practitioners. But the 'Louisiana Civil Law Dictionary' can help. It defines every word and phrase contained in the index to the Louisiana Civil Code, plus many more--in clear and concise language--and provides current citations to the relevant statutes, code articles, and cases. Whether you are a student, researcher, lawyer, or judge, if you deal with Louisiana and its laws, this volume will prove indispensable. It is also a valuable resource for notaries and paralegal assistants. No doubt common law practitioners in other states, too, will find ready uses for a dictionary that translates civil law terminology into familiar concepts; they will know how 'naked ownership' is different from 'usufruct.' And since the civil law dominates the world's legal systems, this book will find a home with libraries and scholars the world over, anywhere there is a need to compare civil law terms with those of the common law.Quality ebook formatting from Quid Pro Books features active contents, linked notes and URLs, and hundreds of linked cross-references for ready association of related topics. Print editions are available of this valuable resource, yet the ebook format is not just a textual replication of the print book or a PDF; instead, the ebook is carefully designed to take full advantage of the digital ereader's optimal arrangements and hyperlinking. "Rome and Kinsella have done a huge service to legal scholarship by assembling the 'Louisiana Civil Law Dictionary' -- a splendid resource for those seeking to understand the rich vocabulary of Louisiana law." --Bryan A. Garner, President, LawProse, Inc.; and Editor in Chief, 'Black's Law Dictionary'

Book excerpt: European law, including both civil law and common law, has gone through several major phases of expansion in the world. European legal history thus also is a history of legal transplants and cultural borrowings, which national legal histories as products of nineteenth-century historicism have until recently largely left unconsidered. The Handbook of European Legal History supplies its readers with an overview of the different phases of European legal history in the light of today's state-of-the-art research, by offering cutting-edge views on research questions currently emerging in international discussions. The Handbook takes a broad approach to its subject matter both nationally and systemically. Unlike traditional European legal histories, which tend to concentrate on "heartlands" of Europe (notably Italy and Germany), the Europe of the Handbook is more versatile and nuanced, taking into consideration the legal developments in Europe's geographical "fringes" such as Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The Handbook covers all major time periods, from the ancient Greek law to the twenty-first century. Contributors include acknowledged leaders in the field as well as rising talents, representing a wide range of legal systems, methodologies, areas of expertise and research agendas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world in which we find ourselves today is no longer governable entirely by resort to the classical system of international law. Even more seriously, it would seem that the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter are no longer being served sufficiently in light of new concerns. The text adopted in 1945 does not convey the image of a world tormented by terrorists. Nor does it reflect the most pressing commitments of our time: to democratic governance, to environmental responsibility, and to a freer and more equitable system of world trade. Increasingly, the international law community acknowledges the need to set new priorities in the development of international law. To that end it seems timely to reconsider the case for strengthening the constitutional framework of norms and institutions that seemed to offer the promise of fulfillment in the second half of the 20th century. The post-Cold War euphoria of the 1990s has virtually evaporated under the stress of new concerns at a time when states comprising the UN system are no longer capable of addressing these challenges. Towards World Constitutionalism argues the case for a more ‘constitutionalized’ system of international law and diplomacy. It is published at a time that the call for reform of the United Nations has become more insistent than at any time in its 60-year history. Even those most faithful to the purposes and principles enunciated in the Charter have had to admit to concerns about the management of certain sectors of the organization; and most concede the unrepresentative character of the powerful Security Council granted legal supremacy as the enforcer of international peace and security. Many go further and complain of unconscionable political bias in the General Assembly and in certain, over politicized, agencies. This collection of essays, by a selection of distinguished scholars representing various traditions of international law, constitutes a major contribution to this debate. It is an important resource for scholars and practitioners, and for all those concerned with the future of international law, and the world community.

This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book represents an in-depth investigation of acquisition, cultivation, and transmission of divine mysteries in Jewish apocalyptic and mystical accounts by focusing on the developments found in early Enochic writings. These accounts deal both with revelations unveiled by God and angels to the patriarch Enoch and with illicit transmission of divine knowledge by the rogue group of the fallen angels, known as the Watchers. Orlov argues that the map of otherworldly knowledge revealed to Enoch inversely mirrors the map of illicit revelations given by the fallen Watchers to humankind. The study suggests that one of the possible objectives for the parallelism is that, by revealing to Enoch the same divine mysteries that were earlier transmitted by the Watchers, God attempts to mitigate the corruption caused by the fallen angels’ illicit instructions. This book will be of interest not only for scholars specializing in historical and religious areas, but also for experts in the fields of anthropology, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and gender theory; it discusses several aspects of early and late Jewish religious epistemologies that elucidate the ideological context for the construction and affirmation of social roles and identities in various Jewish milieus.
