Book excerpt: Thankful's Inheritance by Joseph Crosby Lincoln oseph Crosby Lincoln (1870-1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines like the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator. Although Lincoln was aware of his contemporary naturalist writers like Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser who used American literature to plumb the depths of human nature, he rejected this literary exercise. Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Lincoln's literary portrayal of Cape Cod can be understood as a premodern haven occupied by individuals of old Yankee stock which was offered to readers as an antidote to an America that was undergoing rapid modernization, urbanization, immigration, and industrialization. Lincoln was a Republican and a Universalist. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. At the same time they vary in form, and especially in bulk. This variation is popularly recognized by the variety of terms applied to build. It may be of interest to pause a moment to consider popular terminology relating to build. We have, first, terms expressing a marked deviation below the normal build. Miss Danforth made the expected answer: It ought to be, accompanied by the expected smile. Still smiling, she watched her friend take the path to the gate between the rusted and dried hydrangea bushes which autumn had seen so ruddily glowing. But when she returned to her little writing - room of? The library, when she sank into the luxurious wing chair which had belonged to Great-grand mother Plunkett, extending her slender feet toward the comforting blaze of the wood fire on Great grandfather Danforth's andirons, the smile faded. This is the fifth time to-day, mused Agatha, that I have been told I ought to be thankful. Well, it is true. For no cause within her ken she sighed even as she began to enumerate those emi nent reasons which her friends or she might cite. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thanksgiving: Memories of the Day: Helps to the Habit The beginning of this world's history was a song: its end will be a doxology. The secret of all rational contentment is revealed in that inspired direction which ought to be written on every heart, as a compendious rule of life. "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication, With Thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds thro' Christ Jesus." While the cultivation of a thankful spirit is at all times commended by reason and religion, it would be affectation to attempt any concealment of the fact, that the substance of this volume was prepared with special reference to that day in the calendar which bears the familiar name of Thanksgiving. In the cathedral of Limerick there hangs a peal of bells which was manufactured for a convent in Italy, by an enthusiast who fixed his home for many years near the convent cliff to enjoy their daily chimes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America, Viewed Physically, Politically, Religiously: A Discourse, Delivered on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1864 Upon an elevation, higher than these empires, stood Israel, as the favorite of Heaven. Nor was it in unhallowed boasting that this song of thanksgiving was sung. Human pride was lost in genuine gratitude of the heart. Indeed, inherent greatness in Israel, as a people, was not in any proportion to the extraordinary providences attending them. Israel was fostered, guided, inspired, as werenone of the ancient empires. Great and holy men, such as they did not possess, were her coun selors and leaders. A national inheritance was waiting centuries for her possession. Miraculous experiences formed her history, such as Nineveh, Persia, and Babylon had never known. Her historical record is too familiar to require a rehearsal. In our day it is a constant instructor of the mind and an inspirer of the imagination. Comparing it with that of the other governments of the earth, it was truly declared: He hath not dealt so with any nation. The present is a repetition of the past. Ye believe there are to be observed divine dealings, and manifestations, and what may almost be called miracles in these later days - in our own times, and in the history of our own country. There are things connected with our national history worthy of our heartfelt and grateful remembrance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
