Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the history of Thalhimers department stores, through stories and vintage photographs. Thalhimers was founded in Richmond in 1842 by German Jewish immigrant William Thalhimer as a humble dry goods store. It expanded over the years to become a 26-store chain across the Southeast under the leadership of William's great-grandson, William B. Thalhimer Jr. It boasted the latest in clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, the most modern of housewares, and gourmet foods and baked goods, including the iconic six-layer chocolate cake. Through decades of dramatic political and social change, Thalhimers stood strong, guided by the overarching philosophies of honesty, integrity, quality, and service. Loyal and devoted employees were the heart of Thalhimers, becoming part of the extended Thalhimer family. Sadly, in 1992, as a result of retail consolidation, the Thalhimer name was dropped and the flagship downtown Richmond store closed. A 150-year legacy ended, leaving behind cherished memories, stories, and images.

Book excerpt: During Hitler's rise to power in the 1930's, Richmond department store founder, William Thalhimer and his family traveled to Germany to visit relatives and business contacts. Thalhimer was deeply disturbed and increasingly alarmed as the anti-Semitism that he and his family witnessed escalated into the violence Brown Shirts and Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. Thalhimer became determined to aid Jews fleeing from Germany, and he eventually met a representative of Gross Breesen, a German-Jewish agricultural training institute. The mission of Gross Breesen, and eventually Thalhimer, was to train young Jews in agriculture in hopes that the expertise gained would ensure the students' successful emigration from Germany. Thalhimer purchased a farm, Hyde Farmlands, in Burkeville, Virginia to give the students a home in Virginia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the shadow of Winston-Salem's tall buildings and within hearing distance of highways and railroad yards, Salem Cemetery exudes calmness and serenity throughout its rolling landscape. The hills and ravines that comprise its terrain made it an unlikely location for a cemetery. Since it was chartered in 1857, Salem Cemetery reflects the personal taste and imagination of individuals who designed their family plots, vaults, and markers. A walk along the winding paths, noting names on markers and vaults, is a walk through the city's history, recalling the people who lived, labored, and loved here. The story of the people who find eternal rest in Salem Cemetery is the story of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Book excerpt: February 22, 1960, bore witness to an event that would forever change the social, political, and economic life of a city, a state, and millions of inhabitants. The arrest of 34 Virginia Union University students during a sit-in protest at the most upscale department store in Richmond, Virginia, heralded the upending of a long-established way of life and a change of direction from which there would be no turning back. The students would see their actions galvanize a community into effecting wide-ranging reforms in desegregation and play a significant role in ending the nearly 70-year grip on power of one of the nation's strongest political machines. Bafflingly, their achievement faded into obscurity, and only in recent years has its importance been recognized.

For Elizabeth Johnson-Rice, that day was February 22, 1960 when she decided to join a peaceful protest to SIT-IN and STAND OUT! This book, Sit in and Stand out with Elizabeth Johnson-Rice rhymes the reasons why she walked into Thalhimers Department store in Richmond, Virginia to sit down at a segregated lunch counter and let the world know she was one of the people who would not stand by and watch injustice happen without acting against it. Elizabeth was a young Virginia Union University student on a mission. She and many other protesters looked racism in the eye that day and made history, together as the Richmond 34. ABOUT THE AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATORHabibah Quddus creates art that is full of emotional value. The vivid expression of the story has the ability to give a fun and moving trip into her imagination. In "Sit In and Stand Out", she is able to have the viewer see through the eyes and heart of a young Elizabeth Johnson-Rice and how she felt during her social activism actions in the civil rights era. The simple act of taking a seat and refusing to move is powerful. Young readers are receive a whimsical and artistic point-of-view into a subject that is not, usually, presented in this unique, colorful way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Traci Parker examines the movement to racially integrate white-collar work and consumption in American department stores, and broadens our understanding of historical transformations in African American class and labor formation. Built on the goals, organization, and momentum of earlier struggles for justice, the department store movement channeled the power of store workers and consumers to promote black freedom in the mid-twentieth century. Sponsoring lunch counter sit-ins and protests in the 1950s and 1960s, and challenging discrimination in the courts in the 1970s, this movement ended in the early 1980s with the conclusion of the Sears, Roebuck, and Co. affirmative action cases and the transformation and consolidation of American department stores. In documenting the experiences of African American workers and consumers during this era, Parker highlights the department store as a key site for the inception of a modern black middle class, and demonstrates the ways that both work and consumption were battlegrounds for civil rights.
