The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The confinement and loss of fusion alpha particles are examined for reversed magnetic shear plasmas in TFTR. Such plasmas, with high central q and non-monotonic q profiles can exhibit remarkably reduced energy and particle transport of the thermal ions. However, these same conditions are theoretically predicted to produce high levels of stochastic ripple loss of suprathermal particles, which may reduce the efficiency of plasma heating by the alpha particles and other heating schemes involving fast ions. This paper presents calculations of guiding-center code alpha particle orbit loss from deuterium-tritium (DT) simulations of TFTR deuterium-only experiments. They are compared to results of measurements made in DT reversed shear plasmas of both the confined alpha particle distribution and the alpha particles lost from the plasma. Large fast particle losses have also been found in reversed shear ITER simulations (up to 20%) and from measurements of triton burnup in reversed shear experiments on JT-60U (12%).

Book excerpt: Alpha particle loss was measured during the TFTR DT experiments using a scintillator detector located at the vessel bottom in the ion grad-B drift direction. The DT alpha particle loss to this detector was consistent with the calculated first-orbit loss over the whole range of plasma current I=0.6-2.7 MA. In particular, the alpha particle loss rate per DT neutron did not increase significantly with fusion power up to 10.7 MW, indicating the absence of any new ''collective'' alpha particle loss processes in these experiments.

Book excerpt: The energy distributions and radial density profiles of the fast-confined trapped alpha particles in DT experiments on TFTR are being measured in the energy range 0.5 to 3.5 MeV using the Pellet Charge Exchange diagnostic developed in a collaboration involving General Atomics, the A.F. Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute, and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. A brief description of the measurement technique which involves active neutral particle analysis using the ablation cloud surrounding an injected lithium or pellet as the neutralizer is presented. In the core of quiescent TFTR discharges, measured alpha spectra are consistent with classical slowing down. Measured Doppler broadening of alphas near the birth energy is consistent with the effective temperature of interacting deuterium and tritium ions. Outside the core alpha energy spectra and density profiles are influenced by the magnetic field ripple and appear to be consistent with stochastic ripple diffusion. Sawtooth oscillations lead to the significant broadening of alpha density profiles. The experimental data are modeled using a Fokker-Planck Post TRANSP (FTTP) code which includes the effects of the classical slowing down, magnetic field ripple losses, and the sawtooth mixing of alpha particles. The comparison of the experimental data with the FPPT calculations shows that broadening of trapped alpha density profiles after the sawtooth crashes can be explained by the influence of poloidal electric field generated during the crashes.
