Andrews begins by introducing the reader to New Testament textual studies by presenting all the essential, foundational details necessary to understand New Testament textual criticism. With Andrews' clear and comprehensive approach to New Testament textual studies, FROM SPOKEN WORDS TO SACRED TEXTS, will remain popular for beginning and intermediate students for decades to come. This source on how the New Testament came down us will become the standard book for courses in biblical studies, as well as the history of Christianity. FROM SPOKEN WORDS TO SACRED TEXTS is assured of becoming a reliable, clear-cut resource for generations of Bible students to come. The Greek New Testament was copied and recopied by hand for 1,500 years. Regardless of those scribes who had worked very hard to be faithful in their copying, errors crept into the text. How can we be confident that what we have today is the Word of God? FROM SPOKEN WORDS TO SACRED TEXTS introduces its readers to New Testament textual studies of the Greek New Testament. Herein the reader will find plain language as Edward D. Andrews gives the reader an in-depth view of the history of the New Testament. We will discover how the New Testament books were transmitted. The intentional and unintentional scribal errors that crept into the text for some 1,500 years of corruption by copyists, followed by over 400 years of restoration work by textual scholars who gave their entire lives to give us today a restored New Testament text. In this book, the reader will gain an appreciation for the vast work that has been carried out in preserving the text of the New Testament and finding renewed confidence in its reliability. Andrews' work on FROM SPOKEN WORDS TO SACRED TEXTS was carried out with an apologetical mindset to assist Christians in their defense of God's Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the fascinating and complex world of Bible translation with "The Challenge of Translating Truth: Bible Translation - No Easy Matter." This comprehensive guide delves into the intricate process of rendering the sacred Scriptures from their original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts into modern languages. With a focus on literal translation philosophy, this book emphasizes the importance of conveying exactly what God said through His human authors, rather than what translators think God meant. Written by a conservative evangelical Bible scholar, this publication addresses the numerous challenges and ethical responsibilities faced by translators. It covers a wide range of topics, including the handling of idioms and cultural expressions, the balancing of literal accuracy with readability, the translation of theological terms, and the management of textual variants. Through detailed case studies and historical accounts, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the dedication and meticulous care required to produce faithful and reliable Bible translations. Inside, you will find: An exploration of early Bible translation efforts and the perils faced by pioneers like John Wycliffe and William Tyndale. A thorough examination of translation philosophies, including the pitfalls of dynamic equivalence and the merits of formal equivalence. Insight into the ethical and practical challenges of translating idioms, special terms, and obscure references. A discussion on the reliability of modern Bible translations and the integrity of the original manuscripts. Analysis of controversial passages and principles for maintaining fidelity to the original text. "The Challenge of Translating Truth" is an essential resource for anyone interested in understanding the profound complexities of Bible translation. Whether you are a scholar, a student, or a layperson, this book will equip you with the knowledge and appreciation of the rigorous efforts involved in bringing the Word of God to life in today's languages. Join us on this journey to discover how the sacred Scriptures have been preserved and faithfully translated through the ages, ensuring that the transformative power of God's Word remains accessible to all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Before Jonathan Edwards, Adriaan Neele seeks to balance the recent academic attention to the developments of intellectual history after Jonathan Edwards. Neele presents the first comprehensive study of Edwards's use of Reformed orthodox and Protestant scholastic primary sources in the context of the challenges of orthodoxy in his day. Despite the breadth of Edwards scholarship, his use of primary sources has been little analyzed. Yet, as Neele proves, Edwards's thinking on the importance of these primary sources has significant implications not only for the status of the New England theology of pre-Revolutionary America but also for our understanding of Edwards today. This volume locates Edwards's ideas in the context of the theological and philosophical currents of his day, as well as in the pre-modern exchange of books and information during the colonial period. The pre-Revolutionary status of theology and philosophy in the wake of the Enlightenment had many of the same problems we see in our theological education today with respect to the use and appropriation of classical theology in a 21st-century context. Ideas about the necessity of classical primary sources of Christianity in sustaining our theological education are once again becoming important, and Edwards offers many relevant insights. Edwards was not unique in his deployment of these primary sources; many New England pastors, including Cotton Mather (1663-1728), preached and wrote about the necessity of orthodox theology. Edwards's distinction came in his thinking about the issues set forth in these sources at a transitional moment in the history of Christian thought.
