Todos ellos pretenden reconstruir el mapa de las relaciones literarias entre los dos países ibéricos en el tiempo comprendido entre 1890, con la llegada del Simbolismo a Portugal, y 1936, año en que estalla la guerra civil española, con la firme convicción de que es posible leer ese tiempo apasionante como el continuum múltiple y heterogéneo de la modernidad en la Península. Por los ocho textos que constituyen este volumen desfilan los nombres de Fernando Pessoa, Teixeira de Pascoaes o Eugénio de Castro junto a los de César González-Ruano, Enrique Díez-Canedo o Mauricio Bacarisse. Colaborador habitual de Babelia, suplemento de cultura del diario El País, es traductor de autores portugueses como António Lobo Antunes, Almeida Faria, Manuel António Pina, Fialho de Almeida o Teixeira de Pascoaes, y fue reconocido en 2008 con el premio de traducción Giovanni Pontiero. Book excerpt: Antigonas: Writing from Latin America is the first book in the English language to approach classical reception through the study of one classical fragment as it circulates throughout Latin America. This interdisciplinary research engages comparative literature, Latin American studies,classical reception, history, feminist theory, political philosophy, and theatre history. Moira Fradinger tracks the ways in which, since the early nineteenth century, fragments of Antigone's myth and tragedy have been persistently cannibalized and ruminated throughout South and Central America andthe Caribbean, quilted to local dramatic forms, revealing an archive of political thought about Latin America's heterogeneous neo-colonial histories. Antigona is consistently characterized as a national mother and, as the twentieth century advances, multiplied on stage, forming female collectives,foregrounding the urgency of systemic change or staging gender politics. Through meticulous examination of classical culture in necolonial contexts, Fradinger explores ways of reading Creole texts from the geopolitical South that disrupt the colonial reading protocols that deracinate texts or lockthem into locality. By historicizing Antigona plays and interpreting them with a purpose to address specific colonial legacies, the book reveals how Antigona has ceased being Greek and instead tells stories of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin America. Antigonas rethinks the paradigmsthrough which we understand the presence of ancient cultural materials in former colonial territories, while illuminating an understudied continent in Anglophone reception studies.

Transcurrida una década del Nobel 1988, por primera vez en la historia a un escritor en lengua árabe, la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo consideró que era un buen momento para hacer un primer balance sobre la recepción de la literatura árabe contemporánea en Europa. Book excerpt: El objetivo general de este proyecto de investigación es explorar, a partir de la interpretación mitocrítica de un corpus de obras seleccionadas, el proceso de representación y reinterpretación del mito artúrico de la Tierra Baldía en diferentes etapas de la tradición literaria en lengua inglesa. Con ello, este trabajo analiza críticamente las repercusiones ideológicas que tiene la utilización de los relatos míticos en la práctica literaria. Así, esta tesis doctoral somete a examen la hipótesis de que, en efecto, los mitos articulan ideologías de poder dominantes, las cuales operan como garantes del orden político-social de una determinada comunidad. Frente a esto, la representación literaria del mito puede analizarse como una representación subversiva (o subvertida, al menos) de aquél, lo cual resulta en la formación de narraciones que funcionan como contra-discursos que desafían y se oponen a los discursos dominantes en torno al orden social y a la estabilidad política contenidos en los mitos tradicionales.Este proceso de contestación ideológica se examina en este estudio mediante la lectura mitocrítica de un selecto corpus de textos. Estos textos se generan en cuatro etapas bien diferenciadas de la tradición literaria en lengua inglesa, lo cual justifica la división del trabajo de investigación en cuatro partes. La primera se ocupa de analizar el teatro político inglés del Renacimiento, y explora tres obras: Edward II (ca. 1592), de Christopher Marlowe y Richard II (ca. 1595) y The Tempest (ca. 1610), de William Shakespeare. La segunda parte examina los procesos de representación mítica que pueden rastrearse en los romances británicos del siglo XIX, analizando tres obras: Waverley (1814), de Walter Scott, Idylls of the King (1856-9 y 1868-74), de Alfred, Lord Tennyson y Heart of Darkness (1898), de Joseph Conrad. La tercera parte explora la mitopoética modernista en la literatura de los Estados Unidos, y para ello examina The Waste Land (1922), de T.S. Eliot, Manhattan Transfer (1925), de John Dos Passos, The Great Gatsby (1925), de F. Scott Fitzgerald y The Sun Also Rises (1926), de Ernest Hemingway. Por último, la cuarta parte de este estudio explora los textos literarios contemporáneos que heredan esta mitopoética del modernismo estadounidense, centrando el análisis en seis: To a God Unknown (1933), de John Steinbeck, Nightwood (1937), de Djuna Barnes, The Natural (1952), de Bernard Malamud, One Flew over the Cuckoo¿s Nest (1962), de Ken Kesey, y V. (1963) y The Crying of Lot 49 (1966), de Thomas Pynchon.A lo largo del estudio propuesto se observa como la transición de la modernidad histórica a la modernidad estética, primero, y a la postmodernidad estética, después, trae consigo una deconstrucción del discurso mitológico tradicional. El mito funciona entonces como una forma de expresión estética que no posee ya un significado absoluto y por tanto no opera como instrumento de cohesión social. La antinomia Edén/Tierra Baldía que articula las representaciones literarias del mito artúrico a lo largo de la tradición del romance explorada en este estudio se revela como una construcción ideológica (determinada social e históricamente) que proyecta un sistema de valores sobre una comunidad. Así, este estudio concluye que la representación literaria del mito de la Tierra Baldía a lo largo de la tradición literaria en lengua ingles revela esta inmanencia del mito. Los mitos dan forma a tramas y construyen significados literarios, pero estos son contingentes y están ideológicamente condicionados. Y, a pesar de que esta mitopoética se ha institucionalizado a través de la repetición de motivos y estructuras a lo largo de la tradición, aquélla en realidad se reinterpreta y se subvierte de modo recurrente en los textos literarios que, según puede argüirse, resisten las imposiciones ideológicas de la cultura dominante.

Book excerpt: The book examines the links between literature and film in Latin America by using queer theory and a series of recent cultural productions whose arguments destabilize traditional gender roles and heteronormative masculinity. For many years, the connections between a literary text and its film adaptation have been considered only from the point of view of the latter’s fidelity to the written work, which many scholars imagined to be the original that filmmakers needed to respect. Within the last two decades, however, the idea of adaptation fidelity has been challenged by a number of critics who refute the existence of an original text and promote the notion of an ambiguous and complex relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation. Based on such developments and with the help of queer theory, this book questions and revises several crucial theoretical approximations that analyze the relations between the two art forms in an attempt to overcome the limitations of fidelity discourse. This is the first book-length study that seeks to examine, with the appropriate detail, the connections between film and literature in Latin America through the lenses of queer theory and by focusing on the representations of numerous practices that do not fit within the general framework of heteronormative sexuality.
