Book excerpt: Laos has the smallest population, the weakest military, and despite rapid economic growth in recent years, one of the lowest levels of per capita income in mainland Southeast Asia. Yet a glance at the map reveals its strategic location, between China and Cambodia and Thailand and Vietnam. As Laos was formerly a crossroads for trade routes, the socialist government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic seeks to transform the country into a prosperous crossroads at the heart of this rapidly developing region. Historical Dictionary of Laos, Fourth Edition provides an in-depth examination of one of the least-known countries in Southeast Asia through a detailed chronology, comprehensive introduction, and extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book will be an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Laos.
Book Synopsis Siho and Naga--Lao Textiles by : Edeltraud Tagwerker
Download or read book Siho and Naga--Lao Textiles written by Edeltraud Tagwerker and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siho and Naga are the most powerful mythological figures in Lao tradition manifested in their textiles. This book focuses on the history and culture of the creators of exquisitely hand woven fabrics that have attracted textile connoisseurs all over the world. The study leads not only to rare weaving techniques, patterns and natural dyes, but also to a vast ethnic diversity of people who used to live self sufficiently of their natural environment in rural areas or under royal patronage in ancient cities. Textiles have always been an integral part of the social and spiritual life of Lao people who now, after a devastating war, are challenged to come to terms with tourism, cash, and global market strategies. Siho and Naga shall raise awareness for urgent educational reform countrywide and encourage local and international preservers of Lao culture to continue their efforts to the benefit of Lao's young generation, who eventually will grasp the value of their own textiles in order to set them against cheap imports.

Book Synopsis Isan Writers, Thai Literature by : Martin B. Platt
Download or read book Isan Writers, Thai Literature written by Martin B. Platt and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional characteristics and regional language feature prominently in discussions of Thai identity, but there is little mention of regional literatures. In northeastern Thailand's Isan region, authors write primarily in Thai, but it is possible nonetheless to identify an Isan literature, which played a significant and at times pivotal role in the development of Thai literature in the second half of the twentieth century, as authors grappled with how their origins and experiences related to the Thai centre. Martin Platt's account of Isan literature is an important first step toward a broader study of regional literatures in Thailand, and shapes a model that has relevance for examining literary works in other Asian countries.

Book Synopsis Lao-Tai Textiles by : Patricia Cheesman
Download or read book Lao-Tai Textiles written by Patricia Cheesman and published by Studio Naenna Company, Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Patricia Cheesman's understanding and commitment to the textiles arts of Laos and Thailand in particular has, over the intervening years, produced a wealth of resources for the newcomer and the better informed, for the art historian and for those interested in the practical aspects of weaving and dyeing. Of course the two cannot truly be separated, but Patricia Cheesman's background as a practising crafts person illuminates her publications. When she began to write on Lao and Tai textiles, there was little available on the topic. Today there is a wealth of material--in Thai and English for those seeking to understand something of the technical and cultural foundations of arguably the region's most dynamic art form. There is, however, always a place for a publication such as this, born out of a long involvement with the textiles and their creators. As she has done before, Patricia Cheesman concentrates on bringing clarity, recognition and cultural understanding to yet another set of the region's traditional textiles in an engaging and accessible style." --from the Foreword by Robyn Maxwell, senior curator of Asian art, National Gallery of Australia
Book Synopsis Fields, Forest, And Family by : Carol Ireson
Download or read book Fields, Forest, And Family written by Carol Ireson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Vietnam War, socialist governments ascended to power in all the countries of the former Indochina. In Laos, more than a decade of socialist reorganization was followed by economic liberalization in the late 1980s. Laotian women had traditionally sustained the household and local economy with their work in field, forest, and family, but political and economic changes markedly affected the context of rural women's prevailing sources of power and subordination. Socialist policies, for example, curtailed women's commercial activities while recognizing women's work in agriculture and child care.In this richly detailed volume, Carol Ireson draws on ten years of fieldwork and research to explore this metamorphosis among Laotian women. Throughout, she poses questions such as: What has happened to women's traditional sources of control over their own and others' activities since the 1975 socialist revolution? Have their traditional sources of power or autonomy expanded or contracted as changing conditions have allowed other groups to appropriate women's traditional resources and roles? Have the dramatic changes had different effects on rural women of differing ethnic backgrounds and varying economic means?Focusing on women from three major ethnic groups?the lowland Lao, the Khmu, and the Hmong?Ireson examines the different ways they have responded to political and economic changes. She shows us that the Laotian experience reveals in microcosm the processes of change toward specialization and integration of women's work into national and global economies and explains how this shift deeply affects women's lives.
