Book Synopsis Subversive Virtue by : James A. Francis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention has been devoted in recent years to Christian asceticism in Late Antiquity. But Christianity did not introduce asceticism to the ancient world. An underlying theme of this fascinating study of pagan asceticism is that much of the work on Christian "holy men" has ignored earlier manifestations of asceticism in Antiquity and the way Roman society confronted it. Accordingly, James Francis turns to the second century, the "balmy late afternoon of Rome's classical empire," when the conflict between asceticism and authority reached a turning point. Francis begins with the emperor Marcus Aurelius (121–180), who warned in his Meditations against "display[ing] oneself as a man keen to impress others with a reputation for asceticism or beneficence." The Stoic Aurelius saw ascetic self-discipline as a virtue, but one to be exercised in moderation. Like other Roman aristocrats of his day, he perceived practitioners of ostentatious physical asceticism as a threat to prevailing norms and the established order. Prophecy, sorcery, miracle working, charismatic leadership, expressions of social discontent, and advocacy of alternative values regarding wealth, property, marriage, and sexuality were the issues provoking the controversy. If Aurelius defined the acceptable limits of ascetical practice, then the poet Lucian depicted the threat ascetics were perceived to pose to the social status quo through his biting satire. In an eye-opening analysis of Philostratus's Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Francis shows how Roman society reined in its deviant ascetics by "rehabilitating" them into pillars of traditional values. Celsus's True Doctrine shows how the views pagans held of their own ascetics influenced their negative view of Christianity. Finally, Francis points out striking parallels between the conflict over pagan asceticism and its Christian counterpart. By treating pagan asceticism seriously in its own right, Francis establishes the context necessary for understanding the great flowering of asceticism in Late Antiquity

Book Synopsis What's On God's Sin List for Today? by : Tom Hobson
Download or read book What's On God's Sin List for Today? written by Tom Hobson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians get confused about exactly what to do with the commands in the Bible. Do we need to give up pork and shellfish? Is it a sin to eat roadkill or to eat blood sausage? Is it a sin to wear mixed fabric? Is cross-dressing a crime? What about tattoos? What do we do with that command not to boil a kid in its mother's milk? And if none of these commands are for Christians today, then which Bible commands are for today? This book is designed to help you find solid answers to the question, "Which parts of the Bible's teaching are timeless and universal, and which parts are only for the people to whom the Bible was first written?" We will examine the laws in the Old Testament and the New Testament sin lists, and how they speak to issues such as sex, alcohol and drugs, obscene language, and gambling as they existed in the first-century world, as we seek to discover what's on God's sin list for us today.
Book Synopsis St. Ignatius and Christianity in Antioch by : Virginia Corwin
Download or read book St. Ignatius and Christianity in Antioch written by Virginia Corwin and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theology of St. Ignatius of Antioch was wrought in struggle, not in the study. His letters, written on the road to his death in Rome, show him still inextricably engaged with life, and give clear evidence of the vitality of his work as bishop. He was deeply rooted in Christian loyalties -- deeply enough to die for his faith -- but at the same time he was so much in conversation with his generation that his own believes were shaped by that dialogue. Even today his thought has a vigor and freshness wholly lacking in most of the documents that have survived from the early second century. He revered St. Paul, but he had no hesitation in differing from him. His view of the church was as important as his theology. He saw men as divided inwardly and alienated from one another and from God. Only in the church, he believed, could life be found, because life was the divine gift. There, uniquely, men and women could learn to live in community, and slowly experience the healing of their separateness. - Preface.
