In no other connection are the essential phenomena of life better illustrated, in no other form are they more readily appreciated. The author's experience has clearly indicated that the subject has this value as a collegiate study. Indeed, the book is the direct outgrowth of such experience, and it ha, in substance, been in use as such a text for several years. In its present form it is hoped that it will be found useful to the student who is endeavoring to comprehend the general principles of the science of life, as well as to the student preparing for the professional study of some field of biology or of medicine. Its design as a textbook, rather than as a handbook, accounts for certain characteristics. The topics considered have throughout been approached from the standpoint of their general biological relations, and in the selection of the facts mentioned and the topics discussed, as well as in the style and method of presentation, the student has been first in mind. The arrangement of the subject matter in two sizes of type may prove useful for those undertaking a brief course. Embryology not only throws light on the normal anatomy of the adult, but it also explains the occurrence of many anomalies and mon sters, and the origin of certain pathological changes in the tissues. Obstet rics is essentially applied embryology. From the theoretical Side, em bryology is the key with which we may unlock the secrets of heredity, the determination of sex, and, in part, of organic evolution. There is, unfortunately, a View current among graduates in medicine that the field of embryology has been fully reaped and gleaned of its harvest. On the contrary, much productive ground is as yet unworked, and all well-preserved human embryos are of value to the investigator. Only through the co-operation of Clinicians in collecting and preserving embryos will our ignorance of early human development be rectified. At present, practically nothing is known of the maturing ovum, while of fertilization, cleavage, and the formation of the germ layers we are en tirely in the dark. Aborted embryos and those obtained by operation in case of either normal or ectopic pregnancies should always be saved and pre served at once by immersing them intact in IO per cent formalin or in Zenker's fluid. It was intended primarily to present to the student of medicine the most important facts of development, at the same time emphasizing those features which bear directly upon other branches of medicine. As the work took form, it seemed best to broaden its scope and make it of greater value to the general student of embryology and allied sciences. With the opinion that illustrations convey a much clearer conception of structural features than verbal description alone, the writers have made free use of figures. The plan of adding brief "Practical Suggestions" at the end of each chapter has been so thoroughly satisfactory in the Text-book of Histology, especially in connection with laboratory work, that it has been adopted here. These "suggestions" are not intended to be complete descriptions of embryological technic, but are for the purpose of furnishing the laboratory worker with certain of the more essential practical hints for studying the structures described in the chapter. To avoid frequent repetition, some of the best methods of procuring, handling, and preparing embryological material, and some of the more important formulæ are given in the Appendix, which is intended to be used mainly for the carrying out of the "Practical Suggestions." The development of the Germ Layers has been treated rather elaborately from a comparative standpoint, because this has been found the most satisfactory method of teaching the subject. In the chapter on the Nervous System the aim has been to give a general conception of the subject, which, if once mastered by the student, will give him an insight into the structure and significance of the nervous system that will bring this difficult subject more fully within his grasp.
