The book will be useful for students and the teachers teaching the course. The book has five sections namely basics of microbiology which deals with fundamental principles of general microbiology. Section two covers ecology of soil biota and organisms in soil liter interfaces. Third section is biogeochemical cycles of plant nutrients discussing microbiological transformation of important plant nutrients and their movement in the soil constituents. Fourth section relates with applied aspect of agriculturally useful microorganisms dealing with biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. Fifth section discusses qualities of drinkable water and food and water borne diseases directly concerned with human hygiene. A chapter on traditional and molecular techniques to study soil microorganisms and their activities in situ and laboratory is also incorporated. The language of the book is simple and subject matter is discussed with help of illustration such as graphs, charts, tables and pictures, keeping readers in mind. In the end of each chapter exercise in the form of questions has been incorporated to help the student to recapitulate the contents of the chapter.

Designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students of agriculture and biology, this basic and well illustrated text provides a comprehensive presentation of microorganisms. The book begins with some basic information on micro- organisms including methods of study and classification. It then goes on to describe their morphology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics. A discussion on soil micro-organisms along with pathogenic forms and their effect on plants is also given. The text concludes with a fairly detailed account of microbial biotechnology which covers most of the recent advances in the area. This is the second edition of the author's highly successful earlier edition for which Dr. Selman A. Waksman, dis-coverer of Streptomycin, write the Foreword. The author worked with this Nobel Laureate at Rutgers State University.

The said papers are contributions of different experts in related fields. The book is divided into three sections. Section A covers topics related to the role of microorganisms in the mobilization of nutrients for plant growth such as the relationship of microbial genetics and biological nitrogen; plant surface microflora and plant nutrition; and developments in grass-bacteria associations. Section B discusses the use of microorganisms in the management of pathogens, pests, and weeds and includes topics such as the microbial control of insect pests; microbial herbicides; and agricultural antibiotics. Section C tackles strategies in bioconversion such as the production of biogas from agricultural wastes; bioconversion of lignocelluloses into protein-rich food and feed; and ethanol fuel from biomass. The text is recommended for biologists and agriculturists who would like to know more about the importance of microorganisms in the field of agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Bacteriology NO Single line of discovery has exerted a more pro found influence on the scientific thought of the last few decades than has the development of bacteriology. The researches of Pasteur, Koch, and their successors, opened a field of inquiry that has not only revolutionized all of the biological sciences, but also the applied lines of thought. Medicine was the first of these sciences to re ceive the impetus from such discoveries, but it is no less true that they exert an equally profound effect on agri cultural sciences. Too long has agriculture been consid ered simply an art - a vocation which one had to learn wholly in the school of experience, but the serious student of farm'life finds it necessary to understand the phenom ena of the plant and animal world and to combat or util ize successfully the activities of various microscopic or ganisms. It is therefore essential, even in a practical course, that this important subject be properly consid ered. The text here presented deals with the subject briefly, but it is designed to give a comprehensive treat ment of the different relations which the bacteria bear to problems of farm life. At best, itcan only serve to stimulate the interest of the student to pursue this sub ject more in detail as opportunity permits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Bacteriology: Technical and Agricultural This book is intended to serve as an introduction to Bacteriology in all its branches, though more attention has been bestowed on that aspect of the subject which is of most interest to students of technical and agricultural bacteriology. Of late years, great strides have been made in this fascinating subject, and an attempt has been made to incorporate in the text the recent developments that are of fundamental importance. In some instances, as for example in our conceptions of the anaerobic bacteria, important changes have taken place. In other instances, however, our knowledge is still incomplete and rudimentary. Controversial questions, and matters requiring a technical knowledge of a special nature have been either omitted or have received only a passing reference. In all cases, where a technical application of bacteriology is discussed, the aim has been the demonstration of the fundamental principles which underlie that application, rather than the discussion of the details. It has been deemed advisable to introduce a comparatively large amount of matter of purely theoretical interest, because in no other branch of science is a theoretical knowledge more necessary than in the science of Bacteriology. When one bears in mind that the organisms which are here discussed are visible only with the highest magnifications of the microscope, are very changeable in their nature, and are everywhere present around us, the need for a thorough theoretical training becomes obvious, even for those who wish only to make practical applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental and Agricultural Microbiology Uniquely reveals the state-of-the-art microbial research/advances in the environment and agriculture fields Environmental and Agricultural Microbiology: Applications for Sustainability is divided into two parts which embody chapters on sustenance and life cycles of microorganisms in various environmental conditions, their dispersal, interactions with other inhabited communities, metabolite production, and reclamation. Though books pertaining to soil & agricultural microbiology/environmental biotechnology are available, there is a dearth of comprehensive literature on the behavior of microorganisms in the environmental and agricultural realm. Part 1 includes bioremediation of agrochemicals by microalgae, detoxification of chromium and other heavy metals by microbial biofilm, microbial biopolymer technology including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and polyhydroxybutyrates (PHB), their production, degradability behaviors, and applications. Biosurfactants production and their commercial importance are also systematically represented in this part. Part 2 having 9 chapters, facilitates imperative ideas on approaches for sustainable agriculture through functional soil microbes, next-generation crop improvement strategies via rhizosphere microbiome, production and implementation of liquid biofertilizers, mitigation of methane from livestock, chitinases from microbes, extremozymes, an enzyme from extremophilic microorganism and their relevance in current biotechnology, lithobiontic communities, and their environmental importance, have all been comprehensively elaborated. In the era of sustainable energy production, biofuel and other bioenergy products play a key role, and their production from microbial sources are frontiers for researchers. The final chapter unveils the importance of microbes and their consortia for management of solid waste in amalgamation with biotechnology Audience The book will be read by environmental microbiologists, biotechnologists, chemical and agricultural engineers.
