Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textbook of Abnormal Psychology Without reflecting any discredit on the pioneer treatises on this topic, it can fairly be said that the present volume marks the beginning of an epoch. In fact, I am strongly inclined to believe that the volume signalizes the beginning of the scientific era in abnormal psychology. The authors, it would appear, have produced a work which is in line with the foundations laid by Pierre Janet, and infused with the spirit of the great French pathologist. While the work of Janet has necessarily been restricted to the clinical aspects, the present authors have coordinated therewith the contributions of general and experimental psychology; thus producing a structure worthy of its foundation. I am impressed, in the first place, with the vast amount of materials collected in this volume. No other book has attempted such a task. Obviously, this is a sharp departure from the conventional type of psychology text, in which "easy steps for little feet" has become more and more the rule. In conjunction with the literature-references, which are of extraordinary definiteness, the book furnishes a starting point from which the really industrious student may branch out into any subtopic in this complicated field. In the second place, I am impressed with the critical balance of the book. Giving the various isms and theories their places, the authors avoid imposing on the reader either isms or emotional anti-isms (which is more than I can say for my own writings). Without being subjected to the stress of violent iconoclasm, the reader is prepared for immunity to both pseudo-psychological novelties and ancient superstitions. There are various points of interpretation, of course, on which I should take issue with the authors; and on some of these points I should possibly be right. These features of the presentation, however, increase my appreciation of, and respect for, the whole. The authors, and the psychological profession are to be congratulated on this magnum opus, which demonstrates, among other things, that scientifically minded psychiatrists and psychologists can work together in harmony and fruitfulness: for, it should be said, this book has a history which is not superficially obvious; and in that history, Dr. Chapman has played a part of no small importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Histories in Abnormal Psychology This assemblage of case histories grew out of the author's desire to supply his classes in army psychology with a greater variety of abnormal reaction types than was provided by their introductory textbook. The cases are used to illustrate and objectify assigned chapters in a standard textbook of abnormal psychology. Limited study-time of the student cadets made it unfeasible for them to read them in their original settings of exposition and discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Abnormal Psychology This outline presents a fairly complete list of the abnormal mental phenomena, it shows how these phenomena are grouped into the syndromes manifested in the various psychoses and neuroses, and it summarizes brie y the most important etiological facts and explanatory theories Of the mental anomalies and diseases. An attempt has been made to present in summary the various aspects of this many-sided subject without disproportionate emphasis or neglect of any topic or theory. The purpose Of the outline is to serve as a guide for students Of abnormal psychology in the absence of a comprehensive text-book. It is hoped that it will be found useful also by those medical students and students Of social service who desire a general survey of this field but Who have insufficient time for a regular supervised course or for extensive reading Of the very much scattered literature. It should Of course be regarded as mainly directive and mnemonic; and the references should be consulted for illustration Of facts and exposition Of theories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Normal and Abnormal Psychology In this volume I made an attempt to formulate the fundamental assumptions and main principles that un derlie normal and abnormal psychology. Every science, mathematical, physical or biological, has its postulates as the foundation of its structure. Psychology as a science has also its own assumptions which have to be clearly formulated. The object of the first part of this volume is the unravelling of the principal concepts and hypotheses which form the basis of the study of men tal phenomena. All through the domain of the sciences there is a vast movement for the search of fundamental concepts and for the close investigation of such concepts. Even such an exact science as mathematics has felt this spirit of examination of its fundamental assumptions, axioms, and postulates. Men like Lobatchevsky, Bolyai, Rie man and others have given the start and a number of mathematicians have recently followed in their foot steps, with the result of getting a wider horizon and of opening unknown regions. The same we find in the case of physical sciences, such as physics, mechanics and chemistry. Mach, Poincare, Ostwald, Pearson and others have contributed to this spirit of investigation in the domain of physical sciences. This spirit of inquiry has become of late specially intensified by the revolu tionary discoveries of radio-active bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dissociation of a Personality: A Biographical Study in Abnormal Psychology The present volume contains Parts I and II of a larger - work, "Problems in Abnormal Psychology," but it is complete in itself. It is a study of disintegrated personality, as exemplified by the very remarkable case of Miss Beauchamp. In this study I have (a) traced the development of the different personalities which originated through the disintegration of the normal self, and (b) shown their psychological relations to one another and to the normal self. By giving (c) a detailed account of the daily life of the personalities, after the manner of a biography, I have sought to show their behavior to the environment and the way in which a disintegrated personality can adapt itself to the circumstances of life, and how it fails to do so. Selections from recorded observations, many times in number those here given, have been made use of with the view of familiarizing the reader with the main phenomena, so that when we come to consider in another volume the psychological problems involved, we shall have a knowledge of the fundamental data. These phenomena have been briefly discussed in this volume as an introduction to a deeper study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Abnormal Psychology: The Science and Treatment of Psychological Disorders consists of a balance and blending of research and clinical application, the use of paradigms as an organizing principle, and involving the learner in the kinds of real-world problem solving engaged in by clinicians and scientists. Students learn that psychopathology is best understood by considering multiple perspectives and that these varying perspectives provide the clearest accounting of the causes of these disorders as well as the best possible treatments.
