The reputation possessed by a car is built up after long years of labour and depends for its continuance upon the maintenance Of the peculiar qualities upon which it has been founded - namely, strong construction, reliability, silence, accessi bility, durability, efficiency, appearance, low running costs, etc. All design is an evolution - a process in which defects are eradicated and good features become established, and any departure from past practice should be able to withstand the severest scrutiny before introduction into any model. This con sideration is rendered all the more important from the fact that any alterations are costly to initiate, in that fresh patterns, dies, jigs, etc., are necessary; and because those engaged in the shops are not conversant with the new construction. This book is primarily intended for the use of students of Motor Car Engineering; but it is hoped that many engaged in this branch of Engineering science, including owners of cars, will derive some benefit from a perusal of this volume, which has been mainly written from the notes used by the Author in his lectures to Ordinary and Honours Grade Students at the Polytechnic School of Engineering, Regent Street, W. An attempt has been made to cover the Syllabus of the City and Guilds of London Institute in this subject, which, as may be seen from pages 404 to 407, is very extensive, but it is believed that nothing vital has been omitted excepting the Materials of Construction and the problem of Balancing, which belong properly speaking to Design, and have therefore been included in Volume II. of this work. The Automobile Engineer should have a good working knowledge of thermodynamics, mechanics, chemistry, electricity and mathematics, in order that he may intelligently carry out his work. This is often difficult for him to obtain, and although the space available precludes an extensive study of these subjects, the hope is expressed that the information contained in this volume will materially assist him in understanding the principles of Motor Car construction. The Author is indebted, in several instances, to the descriptive matter contained in the booklets issued by the Manufacturers of certain Specialties, for the descriptions which appear in the text. The Author's best thanks are due to the Council of the Institution of Automobile Engineers and to Dr. Watson, F.R.S., for their kind permission to insert the Tables of the Physical Properties of Petrols given on pages 421 to 425; to Messrs. Longmans & Co., and Mr. Archibald Sharp, Wh. Sc., B.Sc, A.M. Inst. C.E., for permission to use the ratios of excess energy given on page 219; to Messrs. Macmillan, for allowing him to include the Table of Logarithms on pages 427 to 430 to the various Firms who have loaned him electros of illustrations against which their names appear in the text, and to the Automobile Press. He must also acknowledge his indebtedness to his friend and colleague, Mr. Thos. Wadhams, Wh. Ex., for his assistance in reading through several chapters in this work and in checking over many of the numerical examples distributed in the text. This book is the second volume of a text book on Motor Car Engineering, and deals with the design of the petrol engine and chassis. Yet, notwithstanding the fact that the two volumes must of necessity be complementary, an endeavour has been made throughout the work to render it complete in itself, although needless repetition has been avoided. It is anticipated, however, that before students take up the study of design they will have become well acquainted with the constructions commonly employed. The Author has included a few of the illustrations which appeared in the first volume. The subject-matter of this volume has been written from the notes used by the Author in his lecture to students on Motor Car Design, and is intended for the use of engineers, designers, draughtsmen, students and others whose work entails a knowledge of design. The treatment of the subject is from first principles, for two reasons: firstly, because it enables a student to grasp the essentials and the mode of application with less difficulty, and secondly, because empirical formula, always dangerous, are especially so in automobile design, where the conditions under which they are used may vary so greatly from those under which they have originated. Many worked examples have been given, which should be read carefully by the reader. The Author must again express his indebtedness to his friend and colleague Mr. T. Wadhams, Wh. Ex., who has kindly checked many of the calculations and read through the proofs, and to the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the various firms who have loaned him blocks for a number of the illustrations. His best thanks are also due to the Councils of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Automobile Engineers; to the Engineering Standards Committee; to the Editor of the Practical Engineer-s Pocket Book, and to Messrs. Longmans, Green & Co. and Prof. A. Morley, B.Sc., for permission to use matter from their publications and referred to in the text, and to Mr. H. E. Wimperis, M.A., M.Inst.C.E., A.M.I.E.E., for information supplied. It is hardly to be expected that the Author has been entirely successful in avoiding mistakes in the calculations, and he would therefore be glad to have any corrections brought to his notice. PUBLISHERS- NOTE Since this book was put in type the Author has joined the army and his military duties have prevented his devoting time to the correction of proofs for press.
