Works on the gradual development of theological truth in the Church of Jesus Christ usually appear alongside of those which deal with the systematic reproduction of it, and thus stand out as separate works. It was thought best to follow this practice, since this will stress the fact that, after all, the history of the development of Christian thought in the Church is a separate study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs chronologically, discussing notable doctrinal developments for all areas of theology according to their historical appearance. And while this may be good history, it can make for confusing theology, with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies. In Historical Theology, Gregg Allison offers students the opportunity to study the historical development of theology according to a topical-chronological arrangement, setting out the history of Christian doctrine one theological element at a time. Such an approach allows readers to concentrate on one tenet of Christianity and its formulation in the early church, through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. The text includes a generous mix of primary source material as well, citing the words of Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Allison references the most accessible editions of these notable theologians’ work so that readers can continue their study of historical theology through Christian history’s most important contributors. Historical Theology is a superb resource for those familiar with Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology or interested in understanding the development of Christian theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and concise text helps readers grasp the doctrines of the Christian faith considered basic from the earliest days of Christianity. Ronald Heine, an internationally known expert on early Christian theology, developed this book from a course he teaches that has been refined through many years of classroom experience. Heine primarily uses the classical Christian doctrines of the Nicene Creed to guide students into the essentials of the faith. This broadly ecumenical work will interest students of church history or theology as well as adult Christian education classes in church settings. Sidebars identify major personalities and concepts, and each chapter concludes with discussion questions and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament offers a rich palette of ideas, images, and narratives that help us unpack some of the more compact and opaque theological ideas of the New Testament. In conversation with both Christian and Jewish interpreters, prominent scholar Gary Anderson explores the exegetical background of key Christian doctrines. Through a deeper reading of our two-Testament Bible, he illustrates that Christian doctrines have an organic connection to biblical texts and that doctrine can clarify meanings in the text that are foreign to modern, Western readers. Anderson traces the development of doctrine through the history of interpretation, discussing controversial topics such as the fall of man, creation out of nothing, the treasury of merit, and the veneration of Mary along the way. He demonstrates that church doctrines are more clearly grounded in Scripture than modern biblical scholarship has often supposed and that the Bible can define and elaborate the content of these doctrines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Formation of Christian Doctrine is a high-level academic study of the history of Christian doctrinal development. The book distinguishes at length between the scholarly term “inventio” (making explicit what is implicit in the biblical revelation) and the idea of “invention” (presenting a novelty as Christian teaching that conflicts with the biblical revelation). Specifically, The Formation of Christian Doctrine identifies biblical inerrancy as an inventio but sees the “priesthood of believers” concept as a license to believe “whatever teaching seems right to me.” Sure to be of interest in academic circles, even to those who might disagree with the author, this book will appeal to three major groups: Evangelicals in relation to the twentieth-century development of a detailed doctrine of biblical inerrancy, Baptists in light of both biblical inerrancy and the seventeenth-century development of believer’s baptism, and Roman Catholics because of their respect for tradition and interest in such a challenging conservative Protestant perspective as is found here.

Excerpt: ... establishment of this (ib. 188 b).1 Furthermore, the lapsed one must himself satisfy the temporal penalties of sin by works of penance, since the sacrament of repentance releases him only from the eternal penalties; whereas by baptism both the temporal and the eternal penalties are removed. The first draft of the decree was rejected (i. 203 ff.). While a new formula was being prepared, a number of questions arose for discussion, upon which no agreement could be reached: for example, whether the inherent " righteousness' imparted to man is sufficient, through the works which it produces, to merit eternal life, or whetherthere is needed in addition the imputation of grace for the completing of the human works. Very many prelates maintained the former view, e. g., i.1 258 b: "The justified man, if he shall have retained his inherent righteousness and done good works, is able with this to appear before the tribunal of God without any other imputation of righteousness." Similarly, in regard to the assurance of salvation, some held it to be unattainable without a special revelation, while others maintained that one may, by virtue of his reception of the sacraments and fulfillment of the commandments, be sure of his salvation. The former is a Thomistic, the latter a Scotist theory (supra, pp. 121, 202). The discussions upon Justification by Faith are especially instructive. Both the fide and the sine operibus gave rise to difficulties. There were not wanting some who desired to strike out the last words from the decree ( 1. 340 f.); and they were finally suppressed. Faith was conceived as a completed faith ( fides formata), or as another designation of the Christian religion (re/igio Christiana), or as an inclination (dispositio) toward...
