Book Synopsis Lone Star Tarnished by : Cal Jillson
Download or read book Lone Star Tarnished written by Cal Jillson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas pride, like everything else in the state, is larger than life. So, too, perhaps, are the state’s challenges. Lone Star Tarnished approaches public policy in the nation’s most populous "red state" from historical, comparative, and critical perspectives. The historical perspective provides the scope for asking how various policy domains have developed in Texas history. In each chapter, Cal Jillson compares Texas public policy choices and results with those of other states and the United States in general. Finally, the critical perspective allows readers to question the balance of benefits and costs attendant to what is often referred to as "the Texas way" or "the Texas model" and to assess the many claims of Texas’s exceptionalism. Through Jillson’s lively and lucid prose, students are well equipped to analyse how Texas has done and is doing compared to selected states and the national average over time and today. This text is aimed at students and professors of Texas politics who want to stress history, political culture, and public policy. New to the Fourth Edition Fully updated to include the most recent Texas elections and political events Covers the 2019 legislative session Highlights new population data, with projections forward to 2050, recently released by the U.S. Census and the Texas State Data Center. Explores the dramatic increases in Texas oil and gas production and their impact on global and U.S. prices and on the profitability and the viability of many Texas producers in light of the recent plunge in prices. All figures and tables include the most recent data available.
Book Synopsis Valuable Partnerships by : Robert J. Sullivan
Download or read book Valuable Partnerships written by Robert J. Sullivan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuable Partnerships: Cooperation, Innovation, and the Future of Municipal Texas bridges rich scholarship and practical application to produce an important reference for local government scholars and practitioners alike by covering the dynamic approaches altering how Texas municipalities operate. Valuable Partnerships investigates the efficacy of the American fragmented municipal model comprised of 89,000 jurisdictions. Critics consistently criticize this decentralized model while arguing for a regional structure yielding greater efficiencies and scalability that also solves the twin problems of equity and service delivery inequalities. Conversely, Valuable Partnerships presents evidence that Texas local governments leverage regional cooperation and innovation to achieve these results without the political and structural upheaval. The author utilizes historic analysis, benchmark results, socioeconomic measures, and budgetary data to demonstrate how Texas governments increase service performance and reduce the burden to taxpayers. Such results support a counter thesis to the structural regionalism hypothesis by presenting findings that Texas local jurisdictions embracing regional cooperation and data analytics will experience the same benefits.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population change and population forecasts are receiving considerable attention from governmental planners and policy-makers, as well as from the private sector. Old patterns of population redistribution, industrial location, labor-force participation, household formation, and fertility are changing. The resulting uncertainty has increased interest in forecasting because mere extrapolations of past trends are proving inadequate. In the United States of America popUlation forecasts received even more attention after federal agencies began distributing funds for capital infrastructure to state and local governments on the basis of projected future populations. If the national government had based those funding decisions on locally prepared projections, the optimism of local officials would have resulted in billions of dollars worth of excess capacity in sewage treatment plants alone. Cabinet-level inquiries concluded that the U. S. Department of Commerce should (1) assume the responsibility for developing a single set of projections for use whenever future population was a consideration in federal spending decisions and (2) develop methods which incorporate both economic and demographic factors causing population change. Neither the projections prepared by economists at the Bureau of Economic Analysis nor those prepared by demographers at the Bureau of the Census were considered satisfactory because neither method adequately recognized the intertwined nature of demographic and economic change. Against this background, the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the U. S.
