Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High precision measurements of weak neutral current and charged current processes and of the properties of the Z and W bosons have established the standard electroweak model as correct down to a distance scale of 10-16 cm, and are a sensitive probe of possible underlying physics. In this book, all aspects of the program are considered in detail, including the structure of the standard model, radiative corrections, high precision experiments, and their implications. The major classes of experiments are surveyed, covering the experiments themselves, the data analysis, results, and prospects. This volume is a detailed reference for theoretical and experimental researchers, as well as an introductory text for advanced students.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a broad picture of the current understanding of electroweak and strong interactions, according to most recent experimental results from some of the world's largest particle accelerators: LEP II, Tevatron, HERA and SPS. Special attention is given to CP violation, the Higgs boson search, and precision tests of the electroweak thoery. Although generally oriented, the contributions are targeted at postgraduate students in particle physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text the author gives a rather complete account of the available experimental information on neutral current reactions as predicted by the standard theory of electroweak interactions. The data, which range from atomic parity violation to the discovery of the W and Z bosons, impressively support the theory as formulated by Glashow, Weinberg and Salam. The experimental data are critically reviewed and related to the standard theory, whose formal essentials are presented in a transparent way. A complete compilation is given of precision measurements of the Weinberg angle. Special attention is paid to high energy electron-positron experiments at PEP and PETRA leading to the most precise value of the Weinberg angle so far made from such experiments. Latest results from the high-statistics deep-inelastic neutrino scattering experiments have been included along with recent measurements of neutrino electron scattering, data and analysis for polarized-electron nucleon scattering, polarized-muon scattering, atomic parity violation and proton-antiproton experiments establishing the nature of the intermediate bosons.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work done on this project was focused on two LAMPF experiments. The MEGA experiment, a high-sensitivity search for the lepton-family-number-violating decay [mu] [yields] e [gamma] to a sensitivity which, measured in terms of the branching ratio, BR = [[mu] [yields] e [gamma]]/[[mu] [yields] ev[sub [mu]] v[sub e]] [approximately] 10[sup [minus]13], is over two orders of magnitude better than previously reported values. The second is a precision measurement of the Michel [rho] parameter from the positron energy spectrum of [mu] [yields] ev[sub [mu]] v[sub e] to test the V-A theory of weak interactions. The uncertainty in the measurement of the Michel [rho] parameter is expected to be a factor of three lower than the present reported value.

Studies of couplings of the Z° boson to many of the fundamental fermions are now quite detailed, and those of the W{sup {+-}} bosons are well under way. Sensitivity to radiative corrections due to the massive top quark, the as yet undiscovered Higgs boson, and new physics at the TeV scale has been achieved. The Standard Model is consistent with all data, although further studies are indicated in several areas. In the absence of new physics, the Higgs mass is limited to

Book excerpt: The electroweak theory of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam (GWS) has become one of the twin pillars upon which our understanding of all particle physics phenomena rests. It is a brilliant achievement that qualitatively and quantitatively describes all of the vast quantity of experimental data that have been accumulated over some forty years. Note that the word quantitatively must be qualified. The low energy limiting cases of the GWS theory, Quantum Electrodynamics and the V-A Theory of Weak Interactions, have withstood rigorous testing. The high energy synthesis of these ideas, the GWS theory, has not yet been subjected to comparably precise scrutiny. The recent operation of a new generation of proton-antiproton (p{bar p}) and electron-positron (ee−) colliders has made it possible to produce and study large samples of the electroweak gauge bosons W{sup {plus minus}} and Z°. We expect that these facilities will enable very precise tests of the GWS theory to be performed in the near future. In keeping with the theme of this Institute, Physics at the 100 GeV Mass Scale, these lectures will explore the current status and the near-future prospects of these experiments.

It presents, in pedagogical form, a detailed derivation of the Standard Model from the high energy behavior of tree-level Feynman graphs. In this respect, the present text is unique among the existing monographs and textbooks on this subject, and fills a gap in the current literature on electroweak interactions.
