Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-seven commercially available petrochemical-based geotechnical fabrics, both woven and nonwoven, and one fiberglass fabric were evaluated for suitability as reinforcement in an embankment test section to be constructed on soft foundation at Pinto Pass in Mobile Harbor, Ala. by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District. All fabrics were subjected to initial testing in uniaxial tension and fabrics meeting or exceeding established strength criteria were subjected to additional testing to determine creep behavior, soil-fabric frictional resistance, and the effects of immersion and water absorption on developed tensile strength. The effects of specimen width and testing strain rate on uniaxial tension test results were also investigated.

Book excerpt: Twenty-seven commercially available petrochemical-based geotechnical fabrics and one fiberglass fabric were tested and evaluated for suitability as reinforcement in an embankment test section to be constructed on soft foundation at Pinto Pass, Mobile Harbor, Alabama by the U.S. Army Engineer District, Mobile. Both woven and nonwoven fabrics were evaluated. All fabrics were subjected to initial testing in uniaxial tension and fabrics meeting or exceeding project sponsor-established strength criteria were subjected to additional testing for determination of creep behavior, soil-fabric frictional resistance, and effects of immersion and water absorption on developed tensile strength. The effects of specimen width and testing strain rate on uniaxial tension test results were also investigated. Four woven geotechnical fabrics plus the woven fiberglass fabric were found to meet or exceed required tensile strength criteria: Nicolon 66475, Nicolon 66186, Polyfilter-X, Advanced Type I, and Bay Mills 196-380-000 (fiberglass). Both Nicolon materials were found to have minimal creep tendency and strength loss after soaking. Bay Mills 196-380-000 had zero creep tendency and was not tested for soaking strength loss. Minimum soil-fabric frictional resistance for all five fabrics approximated soil alone behavior for a loose relative density condition. All five fabrics were recommended for consideration by the research sponsor for use as embankment reinforcement in test section construction. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents results achieved during the first year's effort to develop test methods and use criteria for fabrics in drainage, erosion control and soil reinforcement applications. The report does not treat fabrics for use in asphalt pavement reinforcement. An extensive literature search and field survey was conducted resulting in the development of interim criteria and fabric properties needed for a wide range of fabric applications. Test methods to evaluate these properties are identified and new test methods suggested where existing ones are considered inadequate. Specific results obtained include a discussion of important fabric properties and how they are affected by type of polymer and manufacture, an identification of fabric uses together with what fabric properties are important for each use, and an appraisal of the current knowledge regarding soil-fabric interaction, fabric performance and cost effectiveness. Recommendations are made for new test methods, or modifications of existing ones which need to be developed, to evaluate important fabric properties. A wealth of basic data has been accumulated for the development of improved tests and criteria to be used in the next phase of the project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to provide a detailed overview of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls deploy horizontal layers of closely spaced tensile inclusion in the fill material to achieve stability of a soil mass. GRS walls are more adaptable to different environmental conditions, more economical, and offer high performance in a wide range of transportation infrastructure applications. This book addresses both GRS and GMSE, with a much stronger emphasis on the former. For completeness, it begins with a review of shear strength of soils and classical earth pressure theories. It then goes on to examine the use of geosynthetics as reinforcement, and followed by the load-deformation behavior of GRS mass as a soil-geosynthetic composite, reinforcing mechanisms of GRS, and GRS walls with different types of facing. Finally, the book finishes by covering design concepts with design examples for different loading and geometric conditions, and the construction of GRS walls, including typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines. The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls will serve as an excellent guide or reference for wall projects such as transportation infrastructure—including roadways, bridges, retaining walls, and earth slopes—that are in dire need of repair and replacement in the U.S. and abroad. Covers both GRS and GMSE (MSE with geosynthetics as reinforcement); with much greater emphasis on GRS walls Showcases reinforcing mechanisms, engineering behavior, and design concepts of GRS and includes many step-by-step design examples Features information on typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines Includes hundreds of line drawings and photos Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls is an important book for practicing geotechnical engineers and structural engineers, as well as for advanced students of civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering.

Book excerpt: Polymeric materials are being used in earthworks construction with ever increasing frequency. The term "Geosynthetics" was recently coined to encompass a diverse range of polymeric products designed for geotechnical purposes. One such purpose is the tensile reinforcement of soil~. As ten sile reinforcement, polymers have been used in the form of textiles, grids, linear strips and single filaments to reinforce earth structures such as road embankments, steep slopes and vertically faced soil retaining walls. A considerable number of retaining structures have been successfully con structed using the tensile reinforcing properties of "geosynthetics" as their primary means of stabilization. Despite such successes sufficient uncertainty exists concerning the performance of these new materials, their manner of interaction with the soil and the new design methods needed, that many authorities are still reticent concerning their use in permanent works. This book represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Application of Polymeric Reinforcement in Soil Retaining Struc tures" held at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario from June 8 to June 12, 1987. The initial concept for the workshop occur red during the ISSMFE Conference in San Francisco in 1985 when a group of geotextile researchers mooted the idea of hoiding a "prediction exercise" to test analytical and design methods for such structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four different geotechnical fabrics were evaluated for use in lateral restraint reinforcement of a cohesionless soil mass. Though considerable increases in strength and load-deformation modulus were obtained for the fabric-reinforced soil systems, no significant difference in behavior was noted among the four fabrics tested, despite variations of an order of magnitude or more in their physical properties. Fabric prestressing had essentially no effect on lateral restraint reinforcement behavior.

Book excerpt: Earth reinforcing techniques are increasingly becoming a useful, powerful and economical solution to various problems encountered in geotechnical engineering practice. Expansion of the experiences and knowledge in this area has succeeded in developing new techniques and their applications to geotechnical engineering problems. In order to discuss the latest experiences and knowledge, and with the purpose of spreading them all over the world for further development, the IS Kyushi conference series on the subject of earth reinforcement have been held in Fukuoka, Japan, every four years since 1988. This fourth symposium, entitled Landmarks in Earth Reinforcement, is a continuation of the series IS Kyushu conferences, and also aims at being one of the landmarks in the progress of modern earth reinforcement practice. The first volume contains 137 papers selected for the symposium covering almost every aspect of earth reinforcement. The second volume contains texts of the special and keynote lectures.
