Book Synopsis Labor’s Great War by : Joseph A. McCartin
Download or read book Labor’s Great War written by Joseph A. McCartin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War I, says Joseph McCartin, the central problem of American labor relations has been the struggle among workers, managers, and state officials to reconcile democracy and authority in the workplace. In his comprehensive look at labor issues during the decade of the Great War, McCartin explores the political, economic, and social forces that gave rise to this conflict and shows how rising labor militancy and the sudden erosion of managerial control in wartime workplaces combined to create an industrial crisis. The search for a resolution to this crisis led to the formation of an influential coalition of labor Democrats, AFL unionists, and Progressive activists on the eve of U.S. entry into the war. Though the coalition's efforts in pursuit of industrial democracy were eventually frustrated by powerful forces in business and government and by internal rifts within the movement itself, McCartin shows how the shared quest helped cement the ties between unionists and the Democratic Party that would subsequently shape much New Deal legislation and would continue to influence the course of American political and labor history to the present day.

Book Synopsis Labor Arbitration Under Fire by : James L. Stern
Download or read book Labor Arbitration Under Fire written by James L. Stern and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor arbitration was once seen as an integral part of bargaining and as a pioneering effort to create shop floor justice. But the decline of unions in status and power has raised profound questions about the future of labor arbitration. While labor unions seek justice for twenty-two million workers covered by collective bargaining, arbitration of employment disputes in the non-unionized sectors of the economy is on the increase, with arbitration procedures promulgated by the employer substituting for more expensive litigation. Moreover, arbitration may find a new role among unrepresented employees as the obligation to justify discharges is more widely adopted. This volume chronicles the development of labor arbitration, analyzes the paths it is now following, and suggests what the future may hold under changing conditions.

Download or read book What Do Unions Do? written by Thomas S. Barrows and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best-known and most-quoted books ever written on labor unions is What Do Unions Do? by Richard Freeman and James Medoff. Published in 1984, the book proved to be a landmark because it provided the most comprehensive and statistically sophisticated empirical portrait of the economic and socio-political effects of unions, and a provocative conclusion that unions are on balance beneficial for the economy and society. The present volume represents a twentieth-anniversary retrospective and evaluation of What Do Unions Do? The objectives are threefold: to evaluate and critique the theory, evidence, and conclusions of Freeman and Medoff; to provide a comprehensive update of the theoretical and empirical literature on unions since the publication of their book; and to offer a balanced assessment and critique of the effects of unions on the economy and society. Toward this end, internationally recognized representatives of labor and management cover the gamut of subjects related to unions.Topics covered include the economic theory of unions; the history of economic thought on unions; the effect of unions on wages, benefits, capital investment, productivity, income inequality, dispute resolution, and job satisfaction; the performance of unions in an international perspective; the reasons for the decline of unions; and the future of unions. The volume concludes with a chapter by Richard Freeman in which he assesses the arguments and evidence presented in the other chapters and presents his evaluation of how What Do Unions Do? stands up in the light of twenty years of additional experience and research. This highly readable volume is a state-of-the-art survey by internationally recognized experts on the effects and future of labor unions. It will be the benchmark for years to come.

Download or read book Live Wire written by Fran Moccio and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Live Wire, Francine Moccio brings to life forty years of public policy reform and advocacy that have failed to eliminate restricted opportunities for women in highly paid, skilled blue-collar jobs. Breaking barriers into a male-only occupation and trade, women electricians have found career opportunities in nontraditional work. Yet their efforts to achieve gender equality have also collided with the prejudice and fraternal values of brotherhood and factors that have ultimately derailed women's full inclusion. By drawing instructive comparisons of women’s entrance into the electricians’ trade and its union with those of black and other minority men, Moccio’s in-depth case study brings new insights into the ways in which divisions at work along the lines of race, gender, and economic background enhance and/or inhibit inclusion. Incorporating research based on extensive primary, secondary, and archival resources, Live Wire contributes a much-needed examination of how sex segregation is reproduced in blue-collar occupations, while also scrutinizing the complex interactions of work, unions, leisure, and family life.
