Es abordado, también a nivel conceptual y desde el punto de vista de sus características y criterios fundamentales, a los tesauros de mayor importancia en Salud Pública en Cuba, toda vez que estos constituyen instrumentos indispensables tanto para la indización como a efectos de la localización de información científica. This academic essay offers a careful look at the processes of representation of the thematic content of an information resource, both with regard to the construction of a reference aimed at the identification of this resource, and in terms of enabling its further recovery, with the aim of recovering the largest amount of pertinent information on a specific research topic. Concepts such as Indexing are addressed. Reference is also made to a set of databases that are regularly used in the scientific field in general and specifically by the most diverse specialists in the medical sciences, to locate reliable, relevant and up-to-date information in support of his teaching duties; academic and research. It is also approached at a conceptual level and from the point of view of its characteristics and fundamental criteria, to the most important thesauri in Public Health in Cuba, since these are indispensable instruments both for indexing and for the purpose of locating scientific information.

Book excerpt: El Tesauro de Biblioteconomía y Documentación es un lenguaje controlado que nace como instrumento para el análisis de contenido y la recuperación de los documentos incluidos en la Base de Datos sobre Biblioteconomía y Documentación, ISOC-DC, producida por el CINDOC (CSIC) desde el año 1975, y que viene a cubrir la ausencia de léxicos documentales en español que abarquen todos los campos semánticos representados en los textos científico-técnicos publicados en este país, muchos de los cuales están recogidos en la mencionada base de datos. Este lenguaje permitirá una indización más homogénea de los documentos y facilitará su recuperación de una forma fácil y exhaustiva, eliminando ambigüedades y dando una visión de la afinidad semántica entre los distintos términos, enriqueciendo la labor de los documentalistas y ampliando el campo de búsqueda del usuario. Así mismo, este tesauro pretende proponer a la comunidad científica un conjunto estructurado de términos sobre la base de un sistema de conceptos aptos para la organización del conocimiento biblioteconómico. Este tesauro consta de tres índices (alfabético, jerárquico y permutado) y dos anexos de equivalencias a otros idiomas (inglés y francés) de todos los términos castellanos aceptados. En total contiene 1153 términos, de los que 914 son preferentes y 239 son no preferentes. En su elaboración se ha seguido la norma UNE 50-106-90, equivalente a la norma ISO 2788-1986 (E), sobre Directrices para el establecimiento y desarrollo de tesauros monolingües.

Book excerpt: With the increase in the amount and dimensionality of scientific data collected, new approaches to the design of displays of such data have become essential. The designers of visual and auditory displays of scientific data seek to harness perceptual processes for data exploration. The general aim is to provide ways for raw data, and the statistical and mathematical structures they comprise, to "speak for themselves" and, thereby, enable scientists to conduct exploratory, in addition to confirmatory analyses of their data. The present primary approach via visualization depends mainly on coding data as positions of visually distinguishable elements in a two- or three- dimen sional euclidean space, e.g., as discrete points comprising clusters in scatter-plot displays and as patches comprising the hills and valleys of statistical surfaces. These displays are immensely effective because the data are in a form that evokes natural perceptual processing of the data into impressions of the presence and spatial disposition of apparent materials, objects, and structures in the viewers apparent physical environment. The problem with this mode of display, however, is that its perceptual potency is largeiy exhausted at dimension three, while we increasingly face the need to explore data of much greater dimensionality. The challenge posed for visualization researchers is to develop new modes of display that can push the dimensionality of data displays higher while retaining the kind of perceptual potency needed for data exploration.

But theoretical engagement with the motivations and outcomes of retranslation often falls short of acknowledging the complex nature of this repetitive process, and reasoning has so far been limited to considerations of progress, updating and challenge; there is even less in the way of empirical study. This book seeks to redress the balance through its case studies on the initial translations and retranslations of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Sand's pastoral tale La Mare au diable within the British literary context. What emerges is a detailed exposition of how and why these works have been retold, alongside a critical re-evaluation of existing lines of enquiry into retranslation. A flexible methodology for the study of retranslations is also proposed which draws on Systemic Functional Grammar, narratology, narrative theory and genetic criticism.
