Book Synopsis Feminist and Human Rights Struggles in Peru by : Pascha Bueno-Hansen
Download or read book Feminist and Human Rights Struggles in Peru written by Pascha Bueno-Hansen and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, following a generation of armed conflict and authoritarian rule, the Peruvian state created a Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC). Pascha Bueno-Hansen places the TRC, feminist and human rights movements, and related non-governmental organizations within an international and historical context to expose the difficulties in addressing gender-based violence. Her innovative theoretical and methodological framework based on decolonial feminism and a critical engagement with intersectionality facilitates an in-depth examination of the Peruvian transitional justice process based on field studies and archival research. Bueno-Hansen uncovers the colonial mappings and linear temporality underlying transitional justice efforts and illustrates why transitional justice mechanisms must reckon with the societal roots of atrocities, if they are to result in true and lasting social transformation. Original and bold, Feminist and Human Rights Struggles in Peru elucidates the tension between the promise of transitional justice and persistent inequality and impunity.

Book Synopsis What Happened to the Women? by : Ruth Rubio-Marín
Download or read book What Happened to the Women? written by Ruth Rubio-Marín and published by SSRC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to women whose lives are affected by human rights violations? What happens to their testimony in court or in front of a truth commission? Women face a double marginalization under authoritarian regimes and during and after violent conflicts. Yet reparations programs are rarely designed to address the needs of women victims. What Happened to the Women? Gender and Reparations for Human Rights Violations emphasizes the necessity of a gender dimension in reparations programs to improve their handling of female victims and their families. A joint project of the International Center for Transitional Justice and Canada's International Development Research Centre, What Happened to the Women? includes studies of gender and reparations policies in Guatemala, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Timor-Leste. Contributors represent a wide range of fields related to transitional justice and include international human rights lawyers, members of truth and reconciliation commissions, and NGO representatives.

Book Synopsis Psychology and Covid-19 in the Americas by : Nelson Portillo
Download or read book Psychology and Covid-19 in the Americas written by Nelson Portillo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of two volumes that bring together the works presented at the congress "Contributions of Psychology to COVID-19", organized by the Interamerican Society of Psychology in 2020. This was one of the first virtual international meetings on psychology and COVID-19 in the world and brought together researchers and professionals from South, Central and North America in a single online event. The content of both volumes includes many of the first issues addressed by researchers, scholars, and practitioners across the Americas at the start of the pandemic – before vaccines, before knowledge of treatment and impact, before our worlds and daily lives were forever changed. Chapters in the first volume focus on the impacts of the pandemic in mental health, social and family dynamics, educational processes and the work of health professionals. Chapters in the second volume are dedicated to studies addressing the impacts of the pandemic in vulnerable populations; proposals of psychological interventions to deal with the distress caused by COVID-19; strategies of coping, resilience and adaptation; and the development of psychological instruments of measurement and assessments during the pandemic. The content of these two volumes marks a baseline for the collective work initiated by psychologists who came together to answer the call to combat the pandemic across the Americas. In that sense, both volumes are truly a “snapshot in time” that could help us assess in the future how much progress we have made to apply psychology to the pressing demands of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graciela chronicles the life of a Quechua-speaking Indigenous woman in the remote Andean highlands during the war in Peru that killed seventy thousand people and displaced hundreds of thousands more in the 1980s and 1990s. The book traces her early years as a young child living in an epicenter of violence to her contemporary life as a postwar survivor. Graciela Orihuela Rocha’s history embodies the horrors, injustices, promises, and challenges faced by countless individuals who endured and survived the war. Her story provides intimate insights into deep-seated divisions within Peruvian society that center around skin color, gender, language, and ties to the land. These fault lines have endured to the present day, fostering discontent and violence in Peru. Through Graciela’s story we not only learn of trauma and dehumanization but also resilience, strength, and perseverance. Graciela’s history provides insight into the systemic challenges of determining truth, implementing justice, and envisioning reconciliation in a country where calls for equality and justice remain unrealized for the most marginalized.
Book Synopsis Santa Bárbara’s Legacy by : Nicholas A. Robins

Book excerpt: In Santa Bárbara’s Legacy: An Environmental History of Huancavelica, Peru, Nicholas A. Robins presents the first comprehensive environmental history of a mercury producing region in Latin America. Tracing the origins, rise and decline of the regional population and economy from pre-history to the present, Robins explores how people’s multifaceted, intimate and often toxic relationship with their environment has resulted in Huancavelica being among the most mercury-contaminated urban areas on earth. The narrative highlights issues of environmental justice and the toxic burdens that contemporary residents confront, especially many of those who live in adobe homes and are exposed to mercury, as well as lead and arsenic, on a daily basis. The work incorporates archival and printed primary sources as well as scientific research led by the author.
