Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book in a four part series includes the writings of one of the first true theologians. This first volume is more of a treaty on Apologetics, the defense of the Christian faith, and brings to view the idea of the apology, the use and end results of idols, along with many other pieces of theology that we in the church should be making a part of our theology even in today's world. Even though the writings are nearly two thousand years old, the relevance is becoming more and more clear in today's world where false teaching is flourishing and thriving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apology of Tertullian He appears to have thought to the bottom of his argument, and to have had a comprehensive view of the world, of the interest and relations of society. Hence it is that his morality is so particularly serviceable and convincing, that his sentences are so weighty, and his reasoning so very just. By thus digging to the foundation, he is in a condition to assign everything its true grounds, and set every duty upon its proper basis. Further, the great probity of this prince, his fortitude, and the nobleness of his mind, gave freedom and Spirit to his thoughts, and made him exert for the service of principle and truth. Besides, he seems to have been born with a prerogative of nature, blessed with a superior genius, and made up of richer materials for sense and virtue, than other people. These advantages, together with an improved education, raised him to that pitch of majesty and distinction, and made his pen almost equal to his sceptre. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tertullian Concerning the Resurrection of the Flesh We have no evidence as to the date of Tertul lian's birth, but if we place it about ad. 160, we shall probably not be far wrong. The date of his conversion is equally unknown, but it may be assigned to the period of mature manhood. He was a man of ardent temperament, unbounded energy and great creative faculty. In such a man conversion was sure to be followed at the earliest possible interval by active work on behalf Of the Faith, and for him the pen was the Obvious instru ment. All his knowledge Of law, literature and philosophy was at once enlisted on the side Of the persecuted religion. Like a later convert from paganism, St. Ambrose, he must have taken up the study of the Scriptures as eagerly as he had followed his earlier pursuits. We have no satis factory evidence that he held any office in the Church. It is safest to regard him as an early forerunner of a succession Of Christian laymen, men like Pelagius, Marius Mercator, Junilius and Cassiodorus, who have had their share in building up the body of Christian doctrine. The passages of S. Clem. Alex. Peed. iii. 1. r ty ttltC' in reference to Is. 53. (coll. Strom, ii. 5.) will from the contrast, have the same meaning, of contrast with, and absence of, human beauty. So again, very plainly, Strom, vi. 17. (p. 293. ed. Sylb.) iix is opposed to a beautifulness, which would fix the miud on itself; " Not without purpose did the Lord will to employ a lowly form of body, lest any praising the comeliness and admiring the beauty, should be distracted from the things said;" and Strom, iii. 17. p. 202. " He Himself, the Head of the Church, passed the life in the flesh, unattractive and without form (xtiiiit 2 tfttffit) teaching us to look up to the invisible (itilii) and incorporeal of the Divine Cause." In like wily when Celsushad said, that whereas it was "impossible that whnso had something Divine above others, should not differ from others," but that His form " was, as they say, small and JiwwJif and abject" (iyiil), Origen admits the IvtuYn, " but not, as Celsus explains it, abject, nor is it clearly shewn that it was small," (c. Cels. vi. . 65.) S. Basil, again, (in Ps. 44.) says only negatively that it " does not celebrate beauty of person, for we have Been Him and He hath no beauty, &c." Is. 53. So S. Aug. in Ps. 43. . 16. " As man He had neither beauty nor comeliness; but He was beautiful in form in That, whereby He is ' above the sons of men.'" Ps. 45. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tertullian: On the Testimony of the Soul and on the "Prescription" Of Heretics The Puritan mind and spirit were never more effectively illustrated and expressed than by our North African author. He saw in the develop ment of pagan thought and religion nothing but a pernicious falsification and obscuring of the Divine Light and Truth: in the pagan mysteries nothing but the devil's anticipation or imitation of the Christian Sacraments (chap.
