Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and most recently human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events that led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetational types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the complementary macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa. This book will interest graduate students and researchers interested in the evolution of the flora of this fascinating continent.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Tertiary Flora of Australia Provided with such ample means, I was enabled to undertake a task which elsewhere, on account of the great difficulty of determining the fossil plants of a continent whose flora is so peculiar, would have been almost impossible. Hence my first duty is to render my most cordial thanks to the gentlemen named, for liberal assistance rendered by them to me. Excerpt: ...basi attenuata adnato-decurrentibus, nervo mediano vix prominente, distincto; strobilis subglobosis, squamis compluribus peltatis. Ob8.--The leafed branchlets, Figs. 9, 10a and 11a (magnified) are very similar to those of Sequoia Langsdorfii, but are distinguished from the latter by having the leaves narrowed towards the base and apex, and by the possession of a middle rib, although broad, but very little obtruding. The strongly carbonized cone, Fig. 8, is almost globular, and at the same time agrees in the size and form of the scales with that of S. Langsdorfii. Locality and Horizon.--Old Rose Valley Lead, with the preceding species. Watson's Starlight Claim, Tingha; carbonaceous clay from Deep Lead (stanniferous) under basalt. Dammara Intermedia, sp nov. Plate VIII, Figs. 34-38. Sp. Char.--D. squamis late cuneatis, margine prope basin utrinque integris, apiccm versus incrassatis, apico obtusissimo subtruncato sursum verso; foliis coriaces, ovali-lanceolatis vel lanceolatis utrinque angustatis, apicc obtusis vel obtusiusculis, basi brcvissimc petiolatis, tenuiter striatis. Obs.--The scales of the cone here figured, Figs. 36 and 37, belong to Dammara, which, like those of Araucaria, easily loosen upon ripening They are short, cuneate, on their upper margin as broad as long, somewhat inflated or thick, and almost truncate, but on the flat side diveringly and thinly striate. Their margins are nonserrate. The leaves, Figs. 34, 35, and 38, belong also, I entertain no doubt, to Dammara. They are varyingly oval and lineal-lanceolate, narrowing upwards to a short sometimes obtuse apex, and downwards to the short and thick petiole. The lamina is thinly striate along its length; a middle rib is wanting, but the stripes are not quite equally thin...

This book was released on 1989-03-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleobotany has enormously expanded the documentation of fossil plant groups, floras and vegetation types, supporting its conclusions by technically much improved analyses of microfossils (pollen) and anatomical details. An increasing quantity and quality of all these informations from the geosciences is available when we follow the history of the biosphere up to the present. Simultaneously, research from the biosciences on the morphology, ecology, distribution, systematics and evolution of extant vascular plants, and on the ecogeographical differentiation of the vegetation cover of our planet, has made enormous progress. Thus, a synthetic geo- and bioscientific approach becomes more and more feasible and urgent for further advances in the many problems of common concern. A symposium organized by the "Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher LEOPOLDINA", attractive to paleo- and neobotanists, stimulated the discussion between specialists of the two disciplines. The main results of the symposium are now presented in this volume: Sixteen international contributions outline the current knowledge about the historical differentiation and evolution of woody plant groups and forests, covering the whole biosphere. This survey, from the beginning of the Tertiary up to the present, is a first systhesis of relevant data from the geo- and biosciences.
