Roskams analiza las estrategias anteriores a la excavación, sus primeros preparativos, la práctica de la excavación, la aproximación estructurada al registro, los registros fotográfico, estratigráfico y espacial, la descripción de los depósitos y de otros elementos, la excavación de la unidad estratigráfica y el análisis estratigráfico, para concluir con un capítulo sobre las perspectivas de futuro, donde se nos habla de las bases de datos existentes, de los sistemas de información geográfica, de los nuevos usos de la fotografía aérea, de los archivos de excavación digitales, etc., pero también de los problemas organizativos y de obtención de recursos que aconsejan una mayor apertura del arqueólogo a la sociedad. No cabe duda de que este manual va a interesar por igual al arqueólogo profesional, al investigador académico, a los estudiantes y a los aficionados que se interesan por la materia y que desean conocer el nivel actual de las técnicas de excavación.
