Para apoyar razonadamente esta tarea se exponen los lineamientos teóricos fundamentales de la mofosintaxis del español, componente central de su gramática, y se hace según el encadenamiento jerárquico y lógico que imponen las estructuras lingüísticas. La autora no ignora que habrá términos o nociones que el estudiante ha manejado anteriormente; pero cree necesario proponer su reconsideración para asegurar la coherencia en el enfoque de la materia y lograr que el análisis y el comentario se efectúen sobre bases objetivas al apoyarse en criterios definidos. Las pautas propuestas posibilitarán además que el estudiante u otros lectores establezcan comparaciones con distintas posiciones teóricas o se planteen alternativas y problemas. Para facilitar y aun estimular estas actitudes críticas se ha incluido una considerable información bibliográfica y se alude frecuentemente a similitudes o diferencias de tratamiento respecto de otras obras de amplia difusión. En la primera parte del libro los capítulos 1 y 14 ofrecen marcos conceptuales generales.
