Non volevo perdere tempo né soldi per l'abbonamento. Quindi cominciai ad acquistare tutte le riviste del settore di allora. A quei tempi, internet non era così diffuso come ora. Sulle pagine patinate di quelle riviste regnava sovrano il pensiero: "più è meglio!" Avevo letto avidamente tutto quello che c'era da leggere e avevo memorizzato le routine di allenamento, regimi dietetici e persino le abitudini personali di tutti i migliori campioni. Seguivo il loro esempio: fino a 30 serie per gruppo muscolare, allenamento tre ore al giorno, sei giorni a settimana. Cominciai ad odiare la palestra! Dopo mesi di addestramento in questo modo, la mia motivazione era diminuita così tanto che iniziai a pensare seriamente di lasciare la palestra. Pensavo che se l'allenamento tre ore al giorno non fosse abbastanza per causare un aumento della mia massa muscolare, forse avrei dovuto aumentare a quattro ore al giorno. Ed era difficile giustificare più tempo sotto i pesi, dato che ero già stanco del mio lavoro. Se lo sviluppo di un fisico significava rinunciare alla vita sociale, non ne valeva la pena. La relazione causa-effetto tra esercizio intenso e crescita muscolare trova sostegno dal fatto che il corpo ha una capacità limitata. L'allenamento ad alta intensità deve essere breve e raro. Memorizzare le routine di allenamento delle riviste muscolari non faceva di me un esperto. Per la prima volta nella mia vita, ascoltai qualcuno che prese molto seriamente i valori della conoscenza, della ragione, della logica e della scienza. A 24 anni, passai rapidamente ad un programma di allenamento ad alta intensità e - in appena un anno e mezzo - il mio fisico stanco e mediocre subì una trasformazione radicale. Un bodybuilder razionale non solo evita il fallimento, ma cerca anche il metodo più produttivo per raggiungere il proprio obiettivo. Trovo sorprendente lo sforzo fisico degli atleti disposti ad allenarsi mesi (o anni) mentre ottengono poco o nessun progresso. C'è un principio nella fisiologia dell'esercizio che afferma come il corpo si adatti in modo specifico a richieste specifiche. Il basso utilizzo nelle palestre dell'allenamento ad alta intensità è dovuto alla non facile comprensione (e messa in pratica) dei suoi princìpi. In teoria sono estremamente semplici da comprendere ma tale semplicità spesso diviene un ostacolo. Questo forse perché nella odierna società moderna siamo abituati a sopravvalutare la complessità e sottovalutare - appunto - la semplicità. Di seguito gli argomenti che tratteremo nel libro. Accordingly, some of the parts of a philosophical building will have to be taken from the literature on the subject as 'ready made' or 'semi-finished' elements, while others will be argued for in the course of building. This is what happened in my work too. In some cases (for in stance, in the case of epistemic relativism), my concern was to illustrate theses which I believed to be sufficiently consolidated, rather than to ar gue for them. In other cases - where I was directly engaged in building the theory that I want to fonnulate - I did exactly the opposite. This is what I have tried to achieve, for example, for those proper architraves of my construction, viz. the connection between scepticism and metaphysi cal realism. and the thesis of the nonnative value of the fundamental epistemological notions (truth, objectivity, and rationality).
