Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit movement in eighteenth century England gave rise to a religious revival that gave birth to the family of churches we know today as the wesleyans. Thus, by his importance as the genius organizer, it is essential to know the life and thought of one of the pillars within the Wesleyan movement: John Wesley. In this book - of a very simple and yet profound way- Dr. Magallanes offers us the most basic traits of the social-religious context in which Wesley lived in the England of the eighteenth century, aspects that influenced the family development of his character and spirituality, the education and training received in Oxford, experiences that awakened in Wesley his passion for evangelization and the doctrine of the holiness of heart and life that characterized the movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in societies that hunger and thirst for spirituality. Today we are witnessing the resurgence of the human being's search to give value and meaning to one's own life, and a sign of this is the demand to find spaces where to cultivate interiority, the taste for spirituality. The paths offered are very diverse. This work reflects on the lay spirituality proposed by Pedro Poveda. Some itineraries are offered in order to live the faith today in present-day societies and to be credible and audacious witnesses of the Gospel. Poveda proposes a way of being, a way of being present and committing oneself that makes visible, in daily life, the extra-ordinary distinctiveness of those who walk in the footsteps of the Risen Lord.

Book excerpt: Cohabitants of the same common home, brothers in existence in the adventure of life, co-participants in the immense and interdependent community of earthly life, animals stand side by side with humans before the eyes of the Creator. Fragile and simultaneously independent, while carrying with them everything they need for survival, they are absolutely vulnerable to growing human, manipulative and destructive power. And what have we done with this power? For some, who still remain in the wild, we invade their territories, betray their trust with traps and hunting, and take away their conditions of survival through the deterioration of the environment in which they live. Others, kidnapped and expropriated of their freedom, we enslave, torture and kill in endless processes of unfathomable suffering. Considered as “products” or “things” in our society: they suffer in circuses, zoos, rodeos, carts, slaughterhouses, farms, fur industries, research and education institutes, and in many other instances and places that we can barely imagine. Given this, it is necessary to expand theological categories from an inclusive perspective, considering animals as an oppressed face within liberation theology. Finding themselves in a situation of oppression and captivity, animals cry for liberation while perpetuating the pain of Christ, who suffers with all creatures. Their piercing moans shame us for being the very cause of their suffering. Every day, Christ continues to be crucified in our smallest brothers by our own hands, He who identified himself with the little ones. Within this horizon, this book, in dialogue with important authors, seeks to contribute to the construction of a theology of animal liberation, freely following the see-judge-act method. With this, we hope, by taking up the cause of Christ, to bring the reality of a world of peace, justice and fraternity for all a little closer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening with a Foreword by James Alison, this volume is the first in-depth treatment of Alison's theological method. John P. Edwards shows that Alison's theological project outstrips René Girard's application of mimetic theory to theology. He concludes that an explicitly Christian theological perspective is necessary for providing a fully coherent account of Girard's notions of "conversion" and "mimetic desire". This volume grounds Alison's theological method in his understanding of the ongoing interaction between conversion and theological reflection, which is informed by his use of mimetic theory. While Alison describes this method as “theology in the order of the discovery”, the author refers to it as an “inductive theology”. The volume closes by demonstrating that such a theology bears fruit in a renewed understanding of the value of Christian doctrines and, particularly, the doctrine of revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He has captured the imagination of people around the world, including those who thought they were "done with" Christianity. In ways no one could have expected and no one predicted, Pope Francis has become a living example of what it might mean to be a Christian in our time and place. The modern world was not ready for Pope Francis, but as has been demonstrated--in his travels to the United States and around the world, in his calls for mercy and defense of the vulnerable--Pope Francis was ready for the modern world. New World Pope: Pope Francis and the Future of the Church explores how Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis--the ideas, experiences, influences, and passions that have formed this pastor who has inspired, challenged, encouraged, and angered people worldwide. Ten experts from around the world--scholars, journalists, church leaders, and others--provide insights into the origins and trajectories of Pope Francis' vision and hopes for the Christian community in our day. Persons intrigued by Pope Francis will find deeper insights into his witness via this exploration of the roots and trajectories of his sense of Christian mission and discipleship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Dr. Argimiro Ruano on Escathology truly impacted me. And when I read his "Cuadernos de Teología Pastoral" / Notebooks about Pastoral Theology, I decided to base my doctoral thesis on them, especially on the topic of Biblical Escathology, which has caught the attention and attracted the interest of readers - not only of Christian readers, but of everyone who seek knowledge about "the hereafter", about what takes place after death. In accordance with Robero Fernández Valladares, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, this work "is essential to learn the theological and biblical foundation regarding Purgatory as well as Martin Luther's thoughts about this doctrine". Dr. Fernández also states: "The analysis of faith and of purification by faith is one of the best parts of the book, above all the explanation of these two principles: 'believing to have been justified is not to be justified' and 'faith does not justify, but the grace that comes from faith' [...]. This is a fundamental book for every believer as well as for pastoral leaders in our communities" (El Visitante de Puerto Rico / Puerto Rico's Visitor, Oct. 19, 1991, p. 19).

Book excerpt: For public and school libraries, this resource reflects recent changes in Library of Congress subject headings and authority files, and provides bilingual information essential to reference librarians and catalogers serving Spanish speakers. Libraries must provide better access to their collections for all users, including Spanish-language materials. The American Library Association has recognized this increasing need. Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries: Bilingual Fourth Edition is the only resource available that provides both authorized and reference entries in English and Spanish. A first-check source for the most frequently used headings needed in school and public libraries, this book incorporates thousands of new and revised entries to assist in applying LCSH and CSH headings. Of the approximately 30,000 headings listed, most include cross-references, and all of the cross-reference terms are translated. MARC21 tags are included for all authorized entries to simplify entering them into computerized catalogs, while indexes to all headings and free-floating subdivisions are provided in translation from Spanish to English. This book gives librarians access to accurate translations of the subject terms printed in books published and cataloged in English-speaking countries—invaluable information in settings with Spanish-speaking patrons.
