Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shows how humans have brought us to the brink and how humanity can find solutions. I urge people to read with humility and the daring to act.” —Harpal Singh, former Chair, Save the Children, India, and former Vice Chair, Save the Children International In conversations with people all over the world, from government officials and business leaders to taxi drivers and schoolteachers, Blair Sheppard, global leader for strategy and leadership at PwC, discovered they all had surprisingly similar concerns. In this prescient and pragmatic book, he and his team sum up these concerns in what they call the ADAPT framework: Asymmetry of wealth; Disruption wrought by the unexpected and often problematic consequences of technology; Age disparities--stresses caused by very young or very old populations in developed and emerging countries; Polarization as a symptom of the breakdown in global and national consensus; and loss of Trust in the institutions that underpin and stabilize society. These concerns are in turn precipitating four crises: a crisis of prosperity, a crisis of technology, a crisis of institutional legitimacy, and a crisis of leadership. Sheppard and his team analyze the complex roots of these crises--but they also offer solutions, albeit often seemingly counterintuitive ones. For example, in an era of globalization, we need to place a much greater emphasis on developing self-sustaining local economies. And as technology permeates our lives, we need computer scientists and engineers conversant with sociology and psychology and poets who can code. The authors argue persuasively that we have only a decade to make headway on these problems. But if we tackle them now, thoughtfully, imaginatively, creatively, and energetically, in ten years we could be looking at a dawn instead of darkness.

Ten Minutes till Midnight takes the reader into the very depths of Hell as two of these innocent men experience twenty insane moments of pure horror. Five years after the heinous crime would justice be served? Prosecutors Al LaCabe and Mike Little, doing battle with a polished public defender and his eccentric, wily partner, would be at their passionate best to see that it was. Book excerpt: Hawai‘i author Chris McKinney’s first entry in a brilliant new sci-fi noir trilogy explores the sordid past of a murdered scientist, deified in death, through the eyes of a man who once committed unspeakable crimes for her. Year 2142: Earth is forty years past a near-collision with the asteroid Sessho-seki. Akira Kimura, the scientist responsible for eliminating the threat, has reached heights of celebrity approaching deification. But now, Akira feels her safety is under threat, so after years without contact, she reaches out to her former head of security, who has since become a police detective. When he arrives at her deep-sea home and finds Akira methodically dismembered, this detective will risk everything—his career, his family, even his own life—and delve back into his shared past with Akira to find her killer. With a rich, cinematic voice and burning cynicism, Midnight, Water City is both a thrilling neo-noir procedural and a stunning exploration of research, class, climate change, the cult of personality, and the dark sacrifices we are willing to make in the name of progress.

Book excerpt: In the near future, Russia has been brought to its knees by a brutal war with Ukrainian nationalists. Following the sudden death of Russia's President, a group of senior military officers move to seize power and bring the war to a swift conclusion by considering methods previously deemed unthinkable. Their strategy, however, is fatally flawed, and a series of miscalculations leads to a sudden nuclear confrontation with the U.S.A.. In the world's hour of need, Dr Lewis Stein, a Russian capabilities expert and former CIA field officer, is brought out of retirement to help an inexperienced President prevent a limited exchange from escalating into global apocalypse. But with chaos sweeping the globe and paranoia at fever pitch, the odds are stacked in the favor of armageddon. Meticulously researched and horribly realistic, Ten To Midnight is the story of a war that could yet sweep the globe.

Book excerpt: Throughout biblical history the Jewish nation had a tradition of putting memorial stones in the places where God had clearly met with or rescued them. They served as reminders of God's faithfulness to them and to the generations that followed. As I reflect on ten years in Central Asia I am overwhelmed by the memories of how faithful God was. In these pages are some of our most significant memorial stories that reflect the pilgrimage of an ordinary person in the hands of an extraordinary God living among those who have never heard the Gospel. My hope is that as you read our stories you find reassurance knowing that God continues to use ordinary people! That Jesus is alive! And that our Father is faithful!

Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos’s most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he’s hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, the idea of a black man playing lead guitar in a rock band seemed exotic. Yet a mere ten years earlier, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley had stood among the most influential rock and roll performers. Why did rock and roll become “white”? Just around Midnight reveals the interplay of popular music and racial thought that was responsible for this shift within the music industry and in the minds of fans. Rooted in rhythm-and-blues pioneered by black musicians, 1950s rock and roll was racially inclusive and attracted listeners and performers across the color line. In the 1960s, however, rock and roll gave way to rock: a new musical ideal regarded as more serious, more artistic—and the province of white musicians. Decoding the racial discourses that have distorted standard histories of rock music, Jack Hamilton underscores how ideas of “authenticity” have blinded us to rock’s inextricably interracial artistic enterprise. According to the standard storyline, the authentic white musician was guided by an individual creative vision, whereas black musicians were deemed authentic only when they stayed true to black tradition. Serious rock became white because only white musicians could be original without being accused of betraying their race. Juxtaposing Sam Cooke and Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, and many others, Hamilton challenges the racial categories that oversimplified the sixties revolution and provides a deeper appreciation of the twists and turns that kept the music alive.
