Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... Ill MOTOR CYCLING AT THE BEGINNING OF the various forms of motor vehicles made in the very earliest days, I suppose none were more complete or perfect, as carrying out the ideas of their makers, than motor tricycles. One would have thought the first step in adapting a motor to a cycle would have been in the direction of a motor bicycle, it being the more popular type of machine. Several inventors did give their attention to this form of machine, and my old friend, H. O. Duncan, endeavoured with Monsieur Suberbie to make a success of manufacturing the Wolff-Muller motor bicycle in France; but it was of such a crude and clumsy design that their efforts were foredoomed to failure. It was in addition an exceedingly heavy machine, and only an expert gymnast could possibly ride it at all. I myself suffered a number of spills in endeavouring to master the peculiarities of a machine of this type. At the same time a cycle seemed to lend itself to the adaptation of a motor, and it is interesting to know that Herr Daimler himself, in his experiments, first succeeded in adapting a motor to a little quadricycle before he had reached the stage of working out its possibilities when applied to a larger vehicle. The successful form of motor cycle was, however, undoubtedly the motor tricycle, and I attribute its success in a large degree to the fact that the well-known firm of Messrs. De Dion-Bouton took up its manufacture, and, like everything else emanating from that firm, the machines they turned out were both successful and practical. The Count de Dion had previously spent much money and conducted many experiments in an attempt to make a motor tricycle propelled by steam, and when the petrol motor became an accomplished possibility, he, with the aid...

Book excerpt: In the late 19th century, bicyling and motoring offered new ways for a hardy minority to travel. Escaping from the 'tyranny' of the train timetables, these entrepreneurs were able to promote private mobility when the road, technology and infrastructure were unequal to the task. With a moribund network out of town, poor roadside accommodation and few services, how could road traction persist and ultimately thrive? Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, including magazines, newspapers and advice books on stable management, this book explores the emergence and development of bicycling and automobility in Britain, with a focus on the racing driver-cum-entrepreneur SF Edge (1868-1940) and his network. Craig Horner considers the motivations, prejudices and cultures of those who promoted and consumed road traction, providing new insights into social class, leisure, sport and tourism in Britain. In addition, he places early British bicycling and automobility in an international context, providing fruitful comparisons with the movements in France, Germany and the United States. The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain is an excellent resource for scholars and students interested in mobility studies, social and cultural history, and the history of technology.

Written by a group of international scholars and motor racing specialists it discusses the sport’s origins, the relationship of motor racing to nation building and modernity (noting its links to fascism and dictatorship), the links between motor racing and the automobile industry, motor racing and the politics both of gender and of race, motor racing, the media and postmodernity, and motor racing, the spatial and globalization. This book speaks to scholars in history, politics, sport studies, the sociology of sport, sport management and cultural studies, along with the many lay readers who are interested in the relationship between motor sport and society.

Book excerpt: The first quarter of the 20th century was a time of dramatic change in auto racing, marked by the move from the horseless carriage to the supercharged Grand Prix racer, from the gentleman driver to the well-publicized professional, and from the dusty road course to the autodrome. This history of the evolution of European and American auto racing from 1900 to 1925 examines transatlantic influences, early dirt track racing, and the birth of the twin-cam engine and the straight-eight. It also explores the origins of the Bennett and Vanderbilt races, the early career of "America's Speed King" Barney Oldfield, the rise of the speedway specials from Marmon, Mercer, Stutz and Duesenberg, and developments from Peugeot, Delage, Ballot, Fiat, and Bugatti. This informative work provides welcome insight into a defining period in motorsports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hybrid machine--powered at times by steam, electricity or internal combustion--the motorcycle in its infancy was an innovation to help bicycle racers go faster. As motor age technology advanced, the quest for greater speed at the velodrome peaked, with riders reaching speeds up to 100 kph on bikes and trikes without brakes, suspensions or gear boxes. This book chronicles the individuals and events at the turn of the 20th century that led to the development of motor-powered two-wheelers.
