Book excerpt: In his new collection of poetry, Ten Lepers and Other Poems: Exorcising Academic Demons, author Genaro Jesse Perez presents verses that explore a variety of topics, including both his experiences in academia and those of other people he has encountered in his more than thirty-five years as a professor. Other poems in the collection were inspired by the gospel of Luke and the angry God of the Old Testament as well. "Sleeping from Futility" examines how student evaluations now dictate who is good in the academic world and who is not, while the "Flood of Perdition" considers the way in which an unexpected death sentence of a young, beautiful student causes a man to rethink his allegiance to his wife of many years. Perez examines the challenges and pitfalls of the academic demons that exist in his life day in and day out. Ten Lepers and Other Poems resonates with the dilemmas encountered in a world many will never understand. Academic Demons Having received the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force that the enemies of truth and reason spawn, Nothing will harm me. I rejoice because my name shall be written in heaven. Woe to them who are to blame: They will fall like meteors from the academic welkin.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leper: And Other Poems It may be as well to state here, that the Leper was written, and prepared for the press, before I read Willis' beautiful poem bearing the same name. Had, I read that before the composition of my own, I would have shrunk from entering into competition with one whose genius so far overshadows mine; but as that is the only point of resemblance, it would scarcely be Worth while to make an alteration in all other re spects, the candid reader will acquit me of plagiarism. Most people have a serious aversion to losing their sense of touch and growing numb and unable to feel another's touch, or even sensing hot and cold temperatures. They have an aversion to losing fingers, toes, and noses. They have an aversion to losing their eyesight, their ability to walk or to pick up a penny, and even their ability to have a sexual relationship. Hopefully, you don't have the physical disease of Leprosy. Did you know, though, that you might have "Spiritual Leprosy?" Yes, your lifestyle may be creating numbness to the activities that are unacceptable to family, to friends, and to God. You are living a life that has become self-serving, addictive, and destructive to the extent that those in your life want nothing more to do with you. You're becoming immobile and non-functional in life because of a slavery to sin that has overtaken you. You are dying and may not even realize it yet. At one point in our lives, we are all leprous. The Ten Lepers will help you understand what spiritual Leprosy is and how to cure it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ministry of the Rev. Stephen F. Dill was forged in the turbulent civil rights years when he stood for social justice and spoke against racial segregation. In this collection of sermons--many from his 20 years as pastor of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama--Dill reflects on the implications of his faith for the lives of individuals and for the life of the world. Robin Wilson, one of Dill's successors at Dauphin Way, praises "the bold humility" of his message, and author Frye Gaillard, in the book's introduction, offers this description of Dill and his sermons: "Almost inevitably, the poetry of his preaching caught the quick of my imagination and quietly, inevitably made me think." Appropriately, the publication of The Poetry of Faith coincides with the 100th anniversary of Dauphin Way. But these challenging and reassuring sermons resonate far beyond those walls. As Methodist educator Gorman Houston put it, this is the Christian faith at its finest, for Stephen Dill has always been "one of those ministers ... able to see the church as it should be and not as it was."
