Book excerpt: Time’s unraveling across the galaxy and the only hope are two people who’d rather kill each other than work together. Drake Bane is a low-class smuggler and general grit in the galaxy’s wheels of progress. He finds himself on the wrong side of a goblin mob boss and gets the choice to either steal an ancient relic or test space decompression up close. When his ship’s impounded as collateral he’s left to sneak his way onto a ship without bothering to get to know the captain or its cast of interesting characters. Too bad or he’d have skipped right past and saved himself a major headache. Captain Variel Tuffman’s got her own secrets which she’s not about to share with a smuggler that lied his way onto her ship. All she wants is to ditch the guy before the couple on her ship who think they’re on a cruise vacation catch on. It all goes wibbly wobbly when an ancient artifact impales itself onto her hand and she can’t get it off. The crew is sent careening across the galaxy on the run from a bunch of species’ militaries and the dwarven antiquities board. At the heart of it all is a hole in the galaxy that no one’s ever seen before or can explain and it’s getting bigger. When the captain starts speaking gibberish and snaps in and out of comas, their only hope may be the relic jammed in her hand.

Book excerpt: Fitful Histories and Unruly Publics re-examines the relationship between Eurasia’s past and its present by interrogating the social construction of time and the archaeological production of culture. Traditionally, archaeological research in Eurasia has focused on assembling normative descriptions of monolithic cultures that endure for millennia, largely immune to the forces of historical change. The papers in this volume seek to document forces of difference and contestation in the past that were produced in the perceptible engagements of peoples, things, and places. The research gathered here convincingly demonstrates that these forces made social life in ancient Eurasia rather more fitful and its publics considerably more unruly than archaeological research has traditionally allowed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human bodies have been represented and defined in various ways across different cultures and historical periods. As an object of interpretation and site of social interaction, the body has throughout history attracted more attention than perhaps any other element of human experience. The essays in this volume explore the manifestations of the body in Italian society from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries. Adopting a variety of interdisciplinary approaches, these fresh and thought-provoking essays offer original perspectives on corporeality as understood in the early modern literature, art, architecture, science, and politics of Italy. An impressively diverse group of contributors comment on a broad range and variety of conceptualizations of the body, creating a rich dialogue among scholars of early modern Italy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pluralistic tapestry of approaches, eminent Dewey scholars address his pragmatic philosophy and whether it should be reinterpreted, reconfigured, or "passed-by," so as to better deal with the problems posed by the twenty-first century. For some, Dewey's contextualism remains intact, requiring more to be amended than radically changed. For others, his work needs significant revision if he is to be relevant in the new millennium. Finally, there are those who argue that we should not be so quick to pass Dewey by, for he has much to offer that has still gone unnoticed or unappreciated. This rich narrative indicates both where the context has changed and what needs to be preserved and nurtured in Dewey as we advance into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Apocalyptic Dread, Kirsten Moana Thompson examines how fears and anxieties about the future are reflected in recent American cinema. Through close readings of such films as Cape Fear, Candyman, Dolores Claiborne, Se7en, Signs, and War of the Worlds, Thompson argues that a longstanding American apocalyptic tradition permeates our popular culture, spreading from science-fiction and disaster films into horror, crime, and melodrama. Drawing upon Kierkegaard's notion of dread—that is, a fundamental anxiety and ambivalence about existential choice and the future—Thompson suggests that the apocalyptic dread revealed in these films, and its guiding tropes of violence, retribution, and renewal, also reveal deep-seated anxieties about historical fragmentation and change, anxieties that are in turn displaced onto each film's particular "monster," whether human, demonic, or eschatological.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major study is a comprehensive scholarly work on a key moment in the history of Europe, the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. The result of years of research, it presents all available sources along with critical evaluations of these narratives. The authors have consulted texts in all relevant languages, both those that remain only in manuscript and others that have been printed, often in careless and inferior editions. Attention is also given to 'folk history' as it evolved over centuries, producing prominent myths and folktales in Greek, medieval Russian, Italian, and Turkish folklore. Part I, The Pen, addresses the complex questions introduced by this myriad of original literature and secondary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its laser-focus on the verbal and visual infrastructure of narrative, The Metanarrative Hall of Mirrors is the first sustained comparative study of how image patterns are tracked in prose and cinema. In film examples ranging from Citizen Kane through Apocalypse Now to Blade Runner 2049, then on to Christopher Nolan's 2020 Tenet, Garrett Stewart follows the shift from celluloid to digital cinema through various narrative manifestations of the image, from freeze-frames to computer-generated special effects. By bringing cinema alongside literature, Stewart discovers a common tendency in contemporary storytelling, in both prose and visual narrative, from the ongoing trend of “mind-game” films to the often puzzling narrative eccentricities of such different writers as Nicholson Baker and Richard Powers-including the latter's eerie mirroring of reader empathy in his 2021 Bewilderment.

Book excerpt: In this work the eminent Dutch physician offers for the intelligent layman as well as for doctors, psychologists, teachers and social workers a guide to the causes and effects of fertility and sterility. This book is the third and last volume in Dr Theodoor Hendrik van de Velde’s trilogy on the problems of marriage and this book completes his internationally authoritative work on eugenics and volitional sex behavior. Following his other book Ideal Marriage and Sexual Tensions in Marriage, this book considers such problems as sexual abstinence and excess, family limitation, the achievement of desired pregnancy, the causes and consequences, physically and emotionally, and sterility in women and impotence in men, artificial insemination, and the delicate personal and social aspects of undesired conception. Scientific in its approach and simple in its presentation, this book is for doctors and laymen. It offers information that contributes to a healthier understanding of voluntary and planned conception and helps safeguard happiness in marriage.
