Book Synopsis The Phoenix Nest by : R. S. (of the Inner Temple.)
Download or read book The Phoenix Nest written by R. S. (of the Inner Temple.) and published by . This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the publication of Tottel's Miscellany in 1557, a number of other such miscellanies appeared, few of them important from an artistic point of view. In 1593, however, a still-unidentified gentleman known only by his initials (R.S.) published this relatively slim, well-printed and well-designed compilation, which included works by a number of significant poets of the day-those identified are Sir Walter Raleigh, Thomas Lodge, Nicholas Breton, Robert Greene, George Peele, the Earl of Oxford, Sir Edward Dyer, and Thomas Watson. It is almost certain that the Phoenix of the title was Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586), to whom the first three elegies in the book are dedicated. This new edition is offered in the belief that such compilations-and particularly compilations of this quality-deserve to be placed before the modern reading public, which in turn can gain a greater understanding of the development of English verse at a critical period in its history. For it was though such miscellanies as this that a wider public was able to gain access to significant contemporary poetry for the first time, poetry that otherwise circulated only in manuscript amongst a narrow circle of gentlemen.

Book Synopsis The Phoenix Mosque and the Persians of Medieval Hangzhou by : George A. Lane
Download or read book The Phoenix Mosque and the Persians of Medieval Hangzhou written by George A. Lane and published by Gingko Library. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1250s, Möngke Khan, grandson and successor of the mighty Mongol emperor, Genghis Khan, sent out his younger brothers Qubilai and Hulegu to consolidate his power. Hulegu was welcomed into Iran while his older brother, Qubilai, continued to erode the power of the Song emperors of southern China. In 1276, he finally forced their submission and peacefully occupied the Song capital, Hangzhou. The city enjoyed a revival as the cultural capital of a united China and was soon filled with traders, adventurers, artists, entrepreneurs, and artisans from throughout the great Mongol Empire—including a prosperous, influential, and seemingly welcome community of Persians. In 1281, one of the Persian settlers, Ala al-Din, built the Phoenix Mosque in the heart of the city where it still stands today. This study of the mosque and the Ju-jing Yuan cemetery, which today is a lake-side public park, casts light on an important and transformative period in Chinese history, and perhaps the most important period in Chinese-Islamic history. The book is published in the Persian Studies Series of the British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS) edited by Charles Melville.

Download or read book Murōji written by Sherry Dianne Fowler and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muroji, a magnificent temple founded in the eighth century, is known both for its dramatic location and the exceptional quality of its ritual objects and art dating from the ninth and tenth centuries of the Heian period. Sherry Fowler makes extensive use of primary sources to explore the circumstances surrounding the creation and function of the temple's main images and considers why major works of early Heian sculpture were housed in such a remote mountain setting. Employing a multifaceted approach that looks at Muroji's art and architecture in socio-political context, she explores the establishment of the temple, its role in the religious life and power structure of the region, and the ways in which the temple reconfigured its early history to suit its later circumstances.
