Book excerpt: Liquid helium has been studied for its intrinsic interest through much of the 20th century. In the past decade, much has been learned about heat transfer in liquid helium because of the need to cool superconducting magnets and other devices. The topic of the Seventh Oregon Conference on Low Temperature Physics was an applied one, namely the use of liquid and gaseous helium to generate high Reynolds number flows. The low kinematic viscosity of liquid helium automatically makes high Reynolds numbers accessible and the question addressed in this conference was to explore various possibilities to see what practical devices might be built using liquid or gaseous helium. There are a number of possibilities: construction of a wind tunnel using critical helium gas, free surface testing, low speed flow facilities using helium I and helium ll. At the time of the conference, most consideration had been given to the last possibility because it seemed both possible and useful to build a flow facility which could reach unprecedented Reynolds numbers. Such a device could be useful in pure research for studying turbulence, and in applied research for testing models much as is done in a water tunnel. In order to examine these possibilities in detail, we invited a wide range of experts to Eugene in October 1989 to present papers on their own specialties and to listen to presentations on the liquid helium proposals.

Book excerpt: There are many safety concerns with cryogenic systems around the world such as particle accelerators. One large concern is the sudden loss of vacuum within the particle accelerator systems. Loss of vacuum can lead to catastrophic equipment and facility damage as well as possible personnel injury. To mitigate risk and improve safety during operation of particle accelerator systems, a clear understanding of the dynamic and complex heat and mass transfer processes after a vacuum break is needed. Research in our lab focuses on the simulation of a sudden loss of vacuum in liquid helium cooled superconducting particle accelerator beam-line tubes. Loss of vacuum is simulated using an evacuated copper tube cooled in liquid helium and suddenly venting nitrogen gas from a buffer tank into the tube. Abrupt temperature rise by thermometers mounted to the tube's wall marked the location of the gas propagating front. Previous experiments and analysis in our lab using normal helium (He~I) and preliminary studies in superfluid helium (He II) observed an exponential slowing of the gas propagating front (Dhuley and Vansciver, 2016). Condensation of the nitrogen gas onto the tube walls was shown to be the reason for the exponential slowing, but the underlying analysis and explanation of the gas dynamics and condensation was limited. This dissertation describes the continuation and evolution of our lab's experiments, and improvements in the quantitative analysis to better explain the underlying physical mechanisms of the slowing down process in both He I and He II. Further systematic experimental and simulation work using different mass flow rates into the evacuated tube were conducted to determine the applicability and robustness of the model in both He I and He II. The improved understanding of the physics of a vacuum break in a liquid helium cooled tube could have practical uses by improving particle accelerator safety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Superconductivity, which has been held annu ally since 1988, is a forum for presenting the most up-to-date information about a broad range of research and development in superconductivity, from funda mental aspects to applications. More than 10 years have passed since the discovery of oxide superconductors and since various developments of applications began. It may be said that the prospects for application of oxide superconductors recently have opened up. Great progress has been made toward practical use, for example, of the flywheel, which uses bulk materials, and the high-performance cryo-cooled magnet made of bismuth wire. These were the results of persistent efforts to develop materials from the viewpoint of materials science and engineering. Also important is the progress in comprehensive understanding of high temperature superconductivity. Unique electronic properties of cuprates such as the non-Fermi liquid normal state, spin-charge separation, spin gap, and d-wave symmetry were discussed at the symposium, as were the unique electromagnetic properties resulting from the low dimensionality of cuprates. In the field of new superconductors, many exotic materials have been discovered since 1986. A decade of work with cuprate superconductors is reviewed in this proceedings, and several of the newest materials are presented. These papers will be instructive for many researchers and for students who are to enter this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book differs from other thermodynamics texts in its objective which is to provide engineers with the concepts, tools, and experience needed to solve practical real-world energy problems. The presentation integrates computer tools (e.g., EES) with thermodynamic concepts to allow engineering students and practising engineers to solve problems they would otherwise not be able to solve. The use of examples, solved and explained in detail, and supported with property diagrams that are drawn to scale, is ubiquitous in this textbook. The examples are not trivial, drill problems, but rather complex and timely real world problems that are of interest by themselves. As with the presentation, the solutions to these examples are complete and do not skip steps. Similarly the book includes numerous end of chapter problems, both typeset and online. Most of these problems are more detailed than those found in other thermodynamics textbooks. The supplements include complete solutions to all exercises, software downloads, and additional content on selected topics. These are available at the book web site www.cambridge.org/KleinandNellis.
