Book excerpt: Abstract: Temperature recovery factors were determined for a slender, thin-walled cone-cylinder, having a 12° vertex angle and a 1.25-inch-diameter cylinder, at Mach numbers from 3.02 to 6.30. The angle-of-attack range was 0° to 45° at Mach numbers up to 3.50, and about 0° to 20° at Mach numbers from 4.23 to 6.30. A transverse cylinder of the same diameter was also tested at Mach number 3.02. Free-stream Reynolds numbers varied from 1.8 to 11.0 million per foot. Flow visualization studies of boundary-layer transition and flow separation were made and the results correlated with recovery-factor measurements.

Book excerpt: Temperature recovery factors were determined on the cylindrical surface of a number of 40 deg cone cylinder models at zero angle of attack and at M = 2.86. The investigation was performed in a 40- by 40-cm intermittent tunnel and an 18- by 18-cm continous tunnel. With atmospheric tunnel-supply conditions, the turbulent recovery factor was found to be 0.89 + or - 0.5% and independent of Reynolds number in the range of 200,000 to 800,000, with Reynolds number based on wall conditions. The turbulent recovery factor can be represented by the cube root of the Prandtl number for a Prandtl number calculated at wall conditions. In the transitional region of the boundary layer, a maximum recovery factor 0.5 to 1% higher than the turbulent value was obtained. Boundary layer history had a marked effect on the value of the recovery factor. The results were compared with the theoretical and experimental findings of other investigators.

Book excerpt: Two circulation conical configurations having 15° half-angles were tested in laminar boundary layer at a Mach number of 6 and angles of attack up to 90°. One cone had a sharp nose and a fineness ratio of 1.87 and the other had a spherically blunted nose with a bluntness ratio of 0.1428 and a fineness ratio of 1.66. Pressure measurements and schlieren pictures of the flow showed that near-conical flow existed above 70° high pressure areas were present near the base and the bow shock wave was considerably curved.

Book excerpt: For the windward surface of the model, local recovery factors in the fully laminar and turbulent regions were not significantly affected by changes in angle of attack. At all angles of attack, increasing the free-stream Reynolds number moved the transition region upstream. For a given angle of attack, the transition region on the leeward surface is substantially upstream of that on the windward surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium convective heat transfer in several real gases was investigated. The gases considered were air, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon. Solutions to the similar form of the boundary-layer equations were obtained for flight velocities to 30,000 ft/sec for a range of parameters sufficient to define the effects of pressure level, pressure gradient, boundary-layer-edge velocity, and wall temperature. Results are presented for stagnation-point heating and for the heating-rate distribution. For the range of parameters investigated the wall heat transfer depended on the transport properties near the wall and precise evaluation of properties in the high-energy portions of the boundary layer was not needed. A correlation of the solutions to the boundary-layer equations was obtained which depended only on the low temperature properties of the gases. This result can be used to evaluate the heat transfer in gases other than those considered. The largest stagnation-point heat transfer at a constant flight velocity was obtained for argon followed successively by carbon dioxide, air, nitrogen, and hydrogen. The blunt-body heating-rate distribution was found to depend mainly on the inviscid flow field. For each gas, correlation equations of boundary-layer thermodynamic and transport properties as a function of enthalpy are given for a wide range of pressures to a maximum enthalpy of 18,000 Btu/lb.

It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of aerodynamic heat transfer were made at a number of stations along a cone-cylinder-flare model having a 15 degrees total-angle conical nose and a 10 degrees half-angle flare skirt. The maximum Mach number was 4.7, and local Reynolds numbers based on body length to a measurement station varied from 2 x 10 to the 6th power to 138 x 10 to the 6th power. Local Stanton numbers measured on the nose cone and flare showed fair agreement with laminar and turbulent theories, while the measurements on the cylinder were generally somewhat lower than theory. Experimental recovery factors, determined twice during the test, were unaccountably lower than theoretical values. Local transition Reynolds numbers, based on length from the nose tip, varied from 3 x 10 to the 6th power to 18 x 10 to the 6th power and were much lower than values previously obtained on the smoother nose of a similar model. At an angle of attack of about 9 degrees, the heat transfer on the flare increased to more than twie the theoretical turbulent value for zero angle of attack. (Author).

In their day, the A-12, YF-12, M-21, D-21, and SR-71 variants outperformed all other jet airplanes in terms of altitude and speed. Now retired, they remain the only production aircraft capable of sustained Mach 3 cruise and operational altitudes above 80,000 feet. This is the first book to address the technical aspects of these incredible aircraft. The author describes the design evolution of the Blackbird, from the Archangel to the Senior Crown (the Air Force's SR-71.) He describes in detail the construction and materials challenges faced by Lockheed, as well as the Blackbird's performance characteristics and capabilities.A NASA historian, the author describes NASA's role in using the aircraft as a flying laboratory to collect data on materials, structures, loads, heating, aerodynamics, and performance for high-speed aircraft. The reader will benefit from the technical and programmatic lessons learned. This volume was produced in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
