Book Synopsis Holding Up the Universe by : Jennifer Niven
Download or read book Holding Up the Universe written by Jennifer Niven and published by Ember. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller From the author of the New York Times bestseller All the Bright Places comes a heart-wrenching story about what it means to see someone—and love someone—for who they truly are. Everyone thinks they know Libby Strout, the girl once dubbed “America’s Fattest Teen.” But no one’s taken the time to look past her weight to get to know who she really is. Following her mom’s death, she’s been picking up the pieces in the privacy of her home, dealing with her heartbroken father and her own grief. Now, Libby’s ready: for high school, for new friends, for love, and for EVERY POSSIBILITY LIFE HAS TO OFFER. In that moment, I know the part I want to play here at MVB High. I want to be the girl who can do anything. Everyone thinks they know Jack Masselin, too. Yes, he’s got swagger, but he’s also mastered the impossible art of giving people what they want, of fitting in. What no one knows is that Jack has a newly acquired secret: he can’t recognize faces. Even his own brothers are strangers to him. He’s the guy who can re-engineer and rebuild anything in new and bad-ass ways, but he can’t understand what’s going on with the inner workings of his brain. So he tells himself to play it cool: Be charming. Be hilarious. Don’t get too close to anyone. Until he meets Libby. When the two get tangled up in a cruel high school game—which lands them in group counseling and community service—Libby and Jack are both pissed, and then surprised. Because the more time they spend together, the less alone they feel. . . . Because sometimes when you meet someone, it changes the world, theirs and yours. Jennifer Niven delivers another poignant, exhilarating love story about finding that person who sees you for who you are—and seeing them right back. "Niven is adept at creating characters. . . . [Libby's] courage and body-positivity make for a joyful reading experience." --The New York Times “Holding Up the Universe . . . taps into the universal need to be understood. To be wanted. And that’s what makes it such a remarkable read.” —TeenVogue.com, “Why New Book Holding Up the Universe Is the Next The Fault in Our Stars” "Want a love story that will give you all the feels? . . . You'll seriously melt!" —Seventeen Magazine

Book Synopsis Burials, Texts and Rituals by : Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin
Download or read book Burials, Texts and Rituals written by Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2008 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The villages on Bali & rsquo;s north-east coast have a long history. Archaeological findings have shown that the coastal settlements of Tejakula District enjoyed trading relations with India as long as 2000 years ago or more. Royal decrees dating from the 10th to the 12th century, inscribed on copper tablets and preserved in the local villages as part of their religious heritage, bear witness to the fact that, over a period of over 1000 years, these played a major role as harbour and trading centres in the transmaritime trade between India and (probably) the Spice Islands. At the same time the inscriptions attest to the complexity in those days of Balinese society, with a hierarchical social organisation headed by a king who resided in the interior precisely where, nobody knows. The interior was connected to the prosperous coastal settlements through a network of trade and ritual. The questions that faced the German-Balinese research team were first: Was there anything left over of this evidently glorious past? And second: Would our professional anthropological and archaeological research work be able to throw any more light on the vibrant past of these villages? This book is an attempt to answer both these and further questions on Bali & rsquo;s coastal settlements, their history and culture.

Download or read book Daylighting written by Derek Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture. The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design. As sustainability becomes a core principal for designers, daylighting comes to the fore as an alternative to artificial, energy consuming, light. Here, Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.
Book Synopsis Semantic, Pragmatic and Discourse Perspectives of Preposition Use by : Dwi Noverini Djenar
Download or read book Semantic, Pragmatic and Discourse Perspectives of Preposition Use written by Dwi Noverini Djenar and published by Pacific Linguistics. This book was released on 2007 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth study of three locative prepositions which are often interchangeable in Indonesian, namely, d, pada and dalam - roughly corresponding to the English 'on, in, at'. Discussing a range of quite subtle meanings and uses of these prepositions in different types of discourse (or genre), it provides a complete descriptive account of prepositional meanings that reflects more closely the range of actual uses by speakers in spoken and written discourses. It addresses important semantic and pragmatic issues including polysemy, sense distinction, conceptual and non-conceptual aspects of preposition use, borrowing and semantic change, context and inferences. The issue of preposition alternation, which has received little attention in previous studies, is discussed in terms of the interplay between overlaps in the semantic range and pragmatic as well as discourse-related factors. This book will be an important book for students and researchers of Indonesian in particular, and those who are interested in semantics and pragmatics in general.
