Download or read book Children and Television written by Michael E. Manley-Casimir and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1987-10-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1970s a shift in perspective has occurred on the relationship between TV and young viewers. Researchers, parents, teachers, policymakers, and consumer advocate groups have shown increased criticism of televisions's role as social educator, babysitter, agent for mass consumer socialization, and perpetrator of questionable social values, morals, and mythical human behaviors. Educators intersted in understanding the complex and wide-ranging contrversies about the influence of television on children will find much in this edited collection to clarify their understanding of the empirical research, educational practice, and national policy issues raised by the relationship between TV and children. The empirical and theoretical studies in Part I explore the interactive relationship between TV and the child viewer. In opposition to the widely held view that the child is a passive recipient of TV information, these studies show that children's background knowledge and their cognitive and experimental skills influence how they interpret TV content, symbolic form, and ultimately, its influence on what kind of learning takes place. The effects of reciprocal relationships of TV violence, commercial advertising and reading ability are investigated in other chapters in this section. Part II moves to practical educational questions and presents approaches to curriculum design for the teaching of critical and literate viewing skills. Innovative curricula, based on principles of liberal education, which encourage active and critical viewing, are spelled out in detail. Part III compares the policies of governments in industrialized nations in assuring the quality of children's television. An annotated list of studies and position papers published from 1975 to 1983 concludes this work.

Book Synopsis Children's Learning From Educational Television by : Shalom M. Fisch
Download or read book Children's Learning From Educational Television written by Shalom M. Fisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its best, educational television can provide children with enormous opportunities and can serve as a window to new experiences, enrich academic knowledge, enhance attitudes and motivation, and nurture social skills. This volume documents the impact of educational television in a variety of subject areas and proposes mechanisms to explain its effects. Drawing from a wide variety of research spanning several disciplines, author Shalom M. Fisch analyzes the literature on the impact of educational resources. He focuses on television programs designed for children rather than for adults, although adult literature is included when it is particularly relevant. In addition, much of the discussion concerns the effects of unaided viewing by children, rather than viewing in the context of adult-led follow-up activities. The role of parent-child co-viewing and issues relevant to the use of television in school or child care also receives consideration. This volume is intended to make the disparate literature on educational television's impact more accessible, by bringing it together into a centralized resource. To that end, the volume draws together empirical data on the impact of educational television programs--both academic and prosocial--on children's knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavior. In addition to its emphasis on positive effects, this volume addresses a gap in the existing research literature regarding children's learning from exposure to educational television. Acknowledging that little theoretical work has been done to explain why or how these effects occur, Fisch takes a step toward correcting this situation by proposing theoretical models to explore aspects of the mental processing that underlies children's learning from educational television. With its unique perspective on children's educational television and comprehensive approach to studying the topic, this volume is required reading for scholars, researchers, and students working in the area of children and television. It offers crucial insights to scholars in developmental psychology, family studies, educational psychology, and related areas.

Book Synopsis Social Learning from Broadcast Television by : Karen Swan
Download or read book Social Learning from Broadcast Television written by Karen Swan and published by Hampton Press (NJ). This book was released on 1998 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the issue of social learning from broadcast television has been of interest to a wide range of researchers and observers. The chapters in this volume employ a variety of research methodologies and focus on a variety of dimensions of the current broadcast television picture. Topics discussed range from content analyses of current programmes to an ethnographic study of how British children use television to gain power over parents and peers, to an examination of the historically contingent phenomena that surround the production and viewership of particular shows, to an analysis of American sitcoms that play a role in the second language learning processes of non-native speakers of English. The wide range of vantage points is provided to remain true to the notion that social realities as portrayed on, created by, or constructed behind the scenes of television, are negotiable, ever-changing and mutually influencing constructs. The chapters therefore represent not only different discussions about the issue of social learning from broadcast television, but also function as dialogues with the media scholar, communications media specialist, educational psychologist, classroom teacher or interested viewer.
