Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bell Canada and the City of Hamilton are pleased to announce they will be moving forward together with a Bell investment of approximately $400 million to expand broadband Internet access in urban and rural areas of Hamilton, the largest digital infrastructure investment in the City's history. Over the next five years, Bell and a Bell-funded team of City of Hamilton staff will bring direct fibre network connections to more than 200,000 homes and business locations throughout the City with zero cost to taxpayers. The network will provide consumers with access to data speeds up to 1.5 gigabits per second, the fastest home Internet speeds in Canada. Working in partnership with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce's Digital Infrastructure Task Force, gaps in digital infrastructure across the community were identified. Subsequently, the City worked to increase investment in digital infrastructure to address the gaps. As part of the plan to enhance Hamilton's standing as a Digital City, Mayor Eisenberger requested that broadband speeds be enhanced for all of urban Hamilton, business parks and major commercial areas, and rural areas in the community. In addition to premium network support for the City's business community, the Bell project includes the expansion of high-speed Bell Wireless Home Internet service to 8,000 homes in rural Hamilton. This innovative 5G capable technology delivered over Bell's advanced LTE wireless network provides broadband residential Internet access for small towns, farming communities and other less populated locations. Bell will work in close cooperation with the City and local contractors, including Aecon, Telecon and Sentrex, to employ innovative techniques to minimize disruption to residents and businesses throughout the project. The majority of the network build will consist of new fibre installed underground, with additional fibre located on Bell, Hydro One and Alectra Utilities poles.

Book Synopsis Modern Telecommunications by : Martin J N Sibley
Download or read book Modern Telecommunications written by Martin J N Sibley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications is fundamental to modern society, with nearly everyone on the planet having access to a mobile phone, Wi-Fi, or satellite and terrestrial broadcast systems. This book is a concise analysis of both the basics of telecommunications as well as numerous advanced systems. It begins with a discussion of why we perform modulation of a carrier signal, continuing with a study of noise affecting all telecommunications links, be they digital or analogue in form. Digital communications techniques are examined in Modern Telecommunications: Basic Principles and Practices. Such an examination is crucial since radio, television, and satellite broadcasts are transmitted using a digital format. Analogue modulations are also considered. The logic behind such an investigation is because, whereas most broadcast systems are moving towards digital transmission, analogue techniques are still very much prevalent (most notably with AM and FM broadcasts). A topic that is often neglected in text books on telecommunications but is at the forefront of Modern Telecommunications concerns transmission lines. This is an important area of work since every length of coaxial cable used to convey signals from an antenna to a receiver is a transmission line. It is vitally important that a transmission line linking a transmitter to the antenna is matched and this topic is explored in great detail in several chapters dealing with Smith charts. Explains the background behind digital TV and radio as well as the legacy of analogue transmissions. Presents materials in a way that minimizes mathematics, making the topic more approachable and interesting to users. Provides a look at familiar systems that readers encounter in their everyday life (including mobile phones, Wi-Fi hotspots, satellites, digital TV, etc.). Demonstrates techniques and topics through end-of-chapter problems. Presents materials in an introductory form, making the information easily understandable and suitable for an undergraduate option course.
Book Synopsis The Struggle for Control of Global Communication by : Jill Hills
Download or read book The Struggle for Control of Global Communication written by Jill Hills and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2002-10-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the development of communication markets and the regulation of international communications from the 1840s through World War I, Jill Hills examines the political, technological, and economic forces at work during the formative century of global communication. Hills analyzes power relations within the arena of global communications from the inception of the telegraph through the successive technologies of submarine telegraph cables, ship-to-shore wireless, broadcast radio, shortwave wireless, the telephone, and movies with sound. As she shows, global communication began to overtake transportation as an economic, political, and social force after the inception of the telegraph, which shifted communications from national to international. From that point on, information was a commodity and ownership of the communications infrastructure became valuable as the means of distributing information. The struggle for control of that infrastructure occurred in part because British control of communications hindered the growing economic power of the United States. Hills outlines the technological advancements and regulations that allowed the United States to challenge British hegemony and enter the global communications market. She demonstrates that control of global communication was part of a complex web of relations between and within the government and corporations of Britain and the United States. Detailing the interplay between American federal regulation and economic power, Hills shows how these forces shaped communications technologies and illuminates the contemporary systems of power in global communications.
