Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of digital information and communications technology in South Korea’s development, starting with and building upon the crucial developments of the 1980s. Its perspective draws on the information society concept and on a conceptual model of strategic restructuring of telecommunications. It also draws on firsthand experience in formulating and implementing policies. The analysis identifies aspects of the Korean experience from which developing countries around the world might benefit. Oh and Larson describe the revolutionary developments of the 1980s including the TDX electronic switching system, a major surge forward in semiconductors, the start of privatization and color television and the thoroughgoing restructuring of Korea’s telecommunications sector. They further explore government leadership, the growing private sector and international trade pressures in the diffusion of broadband, mobile communication, and convergence toward a ubiquitous network society. The role of education in these developments is explored in detail, along with both the positive and negative aspects of Korea’s vibrant new digital media. The book also looks at Korea’s growing international involvement, its role in efforts to build a world information society, and finally, its future place in cyberspace. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and policy makers interested in communications technologies, Asian/Korean Studies and development studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in South Korea surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in South Korea will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.
Book Synopsis Building Telecom Markets by : Whasun Jho
Download or read book Building Telecom Markets written by Whasun Jho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile telecommunication industry has been one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy since the late 1990s. As the first country to offer commercial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular service in the world, Korea was able to jump right into the digital mobile markets, enhancing its status as a leading manufacturer of mobile equipment. While the growth of the telecom industry occurred with the emergence of worldwide market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization in telecommunications, the state-market relationship in Korea evolved from state monopoly toward “centralized governance” and later toward “flexible governance,” which is substantially different from “liberal governance” of the US. This book examines the uniqueness of Korean regulatory reforms of the mobile telecommunication sector, and argues that the market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization should be explained by focusing on the interactions among the state, the private sector, and international political economic environment. It will appeal to scholars and policy-makers alike concerned with market regulation, Asian development and political economy.

Book excerpt: There is no denying that the emotional bond between horses and the humans who love them can reach mystical proportions, and nowhere is that relationship more evident than in these twenty-four true-life accounts of horses rescuing people. Many of the stories recount incidents where death or physical injury was imminent and only because a horse intervened are the narrators alive to tell the tale. Other chapters describe that other plane of salvation where contact with a horse through ownership, employment, or a variety of therapeutic programs has restored mental health, peace of mind, and self-esteem. Narrators include a seventeen-year-old Apache youth whom a horse-rescue project retrieved from drug abuse; a mother whose young son was about to be dragged to his death before the horse recognized the child’s plight; a Vietnam veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder whose work with horses keeps him on an even keel; and the owner of a Miniature Horse that serves as a “seeing eye” guide animal. As varied as the stories are, all share the same conclusion: “My horse saved my life.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an empirical study on the effect of telecommunication rate policy in Korea. More specifically, it examines the relationship between the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act enacted in 2014 and mobile telecommunication rate and device installments. Therefore, the research question is "How does the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act affect consumers' telecommunication rate and device installments?" Six - year data from the KISDI Media Panel was used as the research data, and STATA 13.0 was used for the analysis. As a result of the analysis, since the implementation of Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act, both the communication charges and the terminal installments of users decreased. Despite these monetary benefits, the policy did not establish transparency in the distribution of the mobile communication market, which was originally intended, and it was limited in that it failed to secure policy compliance or trust from the policy target. It is necessary to enhance policy effectiveness through policy adaptability and trust in communication policy.
