Book Synopsis Telecommunications and Politics by : Andrew Davies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By the twenty-first century, the telephone network will be transformed into a high-speed telecommunications infrastructure carrying information of every description - voice, data, words, colour images, high-definition television, manufacturing designs - in the digital form recognised by computers. This technological revolution is connected to a shift from mass production to a system of flexible production, in which far-flung corporate activities are being integrated into digital networks of information and control." "The outcome of the telecommunications revolution is being decided by a political contest between two powerful interest groups. National coalitions of established telephone interests are trying to defend the traditional monopoly, and a new transnational alliance of electronics companies and corporate users is seeking to open up telecommunications to competition." "From the perspective of comparative political economy, Telecommunications and Politics claims that an understanding of the conditions which led to the rise of national telephone monopolies in the past helps to recognise the variety of political options in the present. It argues for a middle way between monopoly and competition: a decentralised alternative consisting of regional companies interconnected with independent long-distance carriers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Decentralization and Confusion about the State of European Telecoms by : Reza Rajabiun

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implications of the experience in Europe with telecommunications policy design and broadband Internet development have become a contested area of policy debate, both in Europe and in other countries. This paper evaluates the manner in which the European experience has been characterized in telecommunications policy debates in Canada about wholesale Internet access regulations. Using broadband Internet speed measurements, we assess the empirical relevance of characterizations of Europe by private interest groups trying to shape public policy in Canada. The analysis highlights the importance of national telecom policies and operator strategies for explaining divergent paths of network development.

This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decentralized Control and Filtering provides a rigorous framework for examining the analysis, stability and control of large-scale systems, addressing the difficulties that arise because dimensionality, information structure constraints, parametric uncertainty and time-delays. This monograph serves three purposes: it reviews past methods and results from a contemporary perspective; it examines presents trends and approaches and to provide future possibilities; and it investigates robust, reliable and/or resilient decentralized design methods based on a framework of linear matrix inequalities. As well as providing an overview of large-scale systems theories from the past several decades, the author presents key modern concepts and efficient computational methods. Representative numerical examples, end-of-chapter problems, and typical system applications are included, and theoretical developments and practical applications of large-scale dynamical systems are discussed in depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will the rush of the information super-highway leave U.S. telecommunication policy in the dust - or will our policy keep pace with and effectively regulate the future of telecommunication? Former FCC Bureau Chief Gerald Brock argues that the existing agencies with overlapping responsibilities can set policies that will wisely steer the telecommunication industry through the high-speed changes just around the corner. Brock develops a new theory of decentralized public decision-making and uses it to clarify the dramatic changes that have transformed the industry from a heavily regulated monopoly to a set of market-oriented finds. In a uniquely authoritative, up-to-date history of telecommunication policy - informed in part by his firsthand experience - the author looks at decisions made by the FCC, state regulatory agencies, the Department of Justice, Congress, and federal courts. He demonstrates how the decentralized decision-making process - whose apparent element of chaos has so often invited criticism - has actually made the United States a world leader in reforming telecommunication policy. Brock traces the flow of information through the bureaucratic web that regulated the divestiture and earlier transitions, such as the first monopoly-eroding attachment of terminal equipment and the development of private microwave systems. Throughout his analysis, Brock convincingly shows that decentralized policymaking generates rational outcomes consistent with public preferences. Replete with details on the role of subsidies in influencing policy, and including in-depth analysis of events after the divestiture, this study could regenerate U.S. policymaking in telecommunication and other publicrealms. It will be essential reading for everyone interested in the current debate over President Clinton's proposals concerning the information infrastructure, for all architects of public policy, and for those who study it.

Book Synopsis Reorganizing Data and Voice Networks by : Thomas R. Koehler
Download or read book Reorganizing Data and Voice Networks written by Thomas R. Koehler and published by Artech House Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the emergence of new technologies like Voice over IP and Wireless LANs, the decentralization of enterprises, and the increased mobility of employees in the work force, separate data and voice networks are no longer adequate for today's organizations. The needs of companies, both large and small, require a newly structured, consolidated corporate network. Focusing on infrastructure, this unique resource provides professionals with practical guidance on reorganizing enterprise networks for maximum efficiency in today's marketplace. The book offers detailed information on key technologies and services such as VPNs (virtual private networks), VoIP (voice over IP), MPLS (multi protocol label switching), and mobile data services. Moreover, this authoritative volume discusses the role of the CIO and the IT department within the organization and offers a thorough understanding of the costs and security issues related to enterprise network development.
