Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice explores the theoretical advantages and clinical implications for utilizing Venous Embolization techniques, including portal vein and hepatic vein embolization. The practice of venous embolization of the liver was originally developed in Japan by Dr. Makuuchi (one of the co-editors of this book) in 1990 and since then, the techniques reviewed in this book are practiced throughout the world and are now considered the “standard of care” at many hepatobiliary centres worldwide. Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice covers a multitude of topics, including: pertinent vascular (microscopic and macroscopic) and surgical anatomy, liver regeneration (including the atrophy-hypertrophy complex), historical perspectives of major hepatic resection, various hepatobiliary surgical procedures , factors affecting hypertrophy, pathophysiology of embolization and resection, embolization techniques (including approaches and embolic agents), the indications for embolization and resection (including pre-operative volumetric and functional assessment and post-embolization followup), potential complications, outcomes data for different diseases, recently advocated strategies (including “definitive” treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma using portal vein embolization after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization) and future perspectives. This book is a valuable resource for interventional radiologists and hepatobiliary surgeons who perform the embolization procedures and liver resections. Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice can also be used secondarily by diagnostic radiologists, medical oncologists specializing in gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, liver transplant surgeons and basic scientists interested in liver regeneration physiology research.

Book excerpt: Minimally invasive aortic valve surgery is a relatively new field which cardiac surgeons are increasingly embracing, and patients and cardiologists are demanding this with more enthusiasm. This is a current subject of great interest with contemporary results already present and more are awaited. This book describes the process through the set-up of a minimally invasive aortic valve surgery program, pertinent investigations, patient selection, different approaches (including endoscopic and robotic), cardio-pulmonary bypass, re-operations and their application with rapid deployment and aortic vascular surgery. This book is intended for all training cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, consultant cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, anaesthetists, intensive care specialists and perfusionists. This is the first book authored exclusively on this subject. The three editors are leading authorities on this subject in the UK and are mentors for many surgical programs. Every chapter is authored by experts in this particular aspect of minimally invasive aortic valve surgery. These surgeons are mainly from the United States, Australia and Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare providers, consumers, researchers and policy makers are inundated with unmanageable amounts of information, including evidence from healthcare research. It has become impossible for all to have the time and resources to find, appraise and interpret this evidence and incorporate it into healthcare decisions. Cochrane Reviews respond to this challenge by identifying, appraising and synthesizing research-based evidence and presenting it in a standardized format, published in The Cochrane Library (www.thecochranelibrary.com). The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions contains methodological guidance for the preparation and maintenance of Cochrane intervention reviews. Written in a clear and accessible format, it is the essential manual for all those preparing, maintaining and reading Cochrane reviews. Many of the principles and methods described here are appropriate for systematic reviews applied to other types of research and to systematic reviews of interventions undertaken by others. It is hoped therefore that this book will be invaluable to all those who want to understand the role of systematic reviews, critically appraise published reviews or perform reviews themselves.

Book excerpt: Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. Whi

It incorporates the major advances in the field during the past decade, in particular those concerning molecular biological procedures and new models that have been developed. It focuses on both methods and techniques, which makes it an essential and comprehensive reference as well as a benchtop manual. The Handbook will help investigators save time and effort in formulating an approach to test a new potential therapeutic agent or combination of agents for in vivo efficacy and to position the therapy for specific infections where it may have therapeutic promise. The book is divided into five sections; the first covering the general methodologies, followed by sections describing experimental bacterial, mycotic, parasitic, and viral infections. - Discusses ethical and safety aspects in an introductory background section - Covers principles of animal care and current techniques appropriate for the use of animal models of infection - Details a wide range of animals including rodents, rabbits, cats, and primates - Provides hands-on descriptions of how to set up the model - Discusses the major advantages and limitations of each model - Ensures full coverage of bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive coverage of current topics in idiopathic scoliosis (IS). A three-dimensional deformity of the spine, the condition is characterized by lateral curvature combined with vertebral rotation. The primary lesion, however, lies in the median sagittal plane, taking the form of a lordosis. Although the clinical manifestations of scoliosis have been well documented, its cause and pathogenesis have not yet been determined. Research into what causes IS has focused on the structural elements of the spine, spinal musculature, collagenous structures, the endocrine system, the central nervous system, and genetics. Results of these studies have brought about a new perception of IS epiphenomena, but the main cause of IS remains unknown. Recently, several investigators have produced new hypotheses regarding the cause of IS using the developing techniques of genetics, biochemistry, and neurology. This book is a review of the various causative factors thus far proposed for IS and an introduction to the directions in which research is heading to determine the primary cause of IS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Critical Care Evolved METs? In early 2004, when Dr. Michael DeVita informed me that he was cons- ering a textbook on the new concept of Medical Emergency Teams (METs), I was surprised. At Presbyterian-University Hospital in Pittsburgh we int- duced this idea some 15 years ago, but did not think it was revolutionary enough to publish. This, even though, our fellows in critical care medicine training were all involved and informed about the importance of “C- dition C (Crisis),” as it was called to distinguish it from “Condition A (Arrest). ”We thought it absurd to intervene only after cardiac arrest had occurred, because most cases showed prior deterioration and cardiac arrest could be prevented with rapid team work to correct precluding problems. The above thoughts were logical in Pittsburgh, where the legendary Dr. Peter Safar had been working since the late 1950s on improving current resuscitation techniques, ?rst ventilation victims of apneic from drowning, treatment of smoke inhalation, and so on. This was followed by external cardiac compression upon demonstration of its ef?ciency in cases of unexpected sudden cardiac arrest. Dr. Safar devoted his entire professional life to improvement of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He and many others emphasized the importance of getting the CPR team to o- of-hospital victims of cardiac arrest as quickly as possible.
