More specifically this thesis paper examines the potential diffusion of military technologies through the international system as a result of the extensive American adoption and utilization of unmanned aerial systems, commonly referred to as drone technology. What makes drone technology a game changing, revolutionary, and disruptive "precision strike" application is that it offers both offensive and defensive capabilities that were not available a generation ago. This highly advanced attribute of modern warfare technology highlights the potential problems and pitfalls of future high-tech warfare and the latest in the ongoing revolution in military affairs. Overall, the main contribution of this thesis brings to light two main issues: First, the extensive and aggressive utilization of drone technology by the United States has served as a catalyst for the acceleration of diffusion throughout the international system which may bring undesirable consequences to a state's survival and security. Second, never before in the history of air warfare has the United States been able to discriminate between combatants and non-combatants as well as we can with drones. States who adopt drones will have a number of advantages that could fundamentally alter how they engage in counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations. Perhaps the most significant advantage of drones is their ability to join together intelligence collection with decisions to use force.
