Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pancreatic cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. The survival remains extremely low with an estimated overall 5-year survival rate of approximately 5%. For patients who are able to undergo surgery the 5-year survival rate is approximately 20-30%. Unlike other solid organ malignancies, the 5-year survival of pancreatic cancer has not improved significantly over the last few decades. There is an urgent need for more effective treatments for both resectable and unresectable cancer to improve outcomes for patients Innovations on the early, non-invasive diagnosis and more efficient treatments are desperately needed to further improve outcomes. It is imperative that when new techniques are introduced into clinical practice, they are done so in a manner that is transparent to ensure. Furthermore, the technique should be described in detail alongside patient selection (and evolution with time), governance arrangements, clinical- and patient-reported outcomes to ensure incremental learning occurs so promising innovations are adopted rapidly.
