Book excerpt: Radar is a technology used in several facets of modern life, with many different civilian and military applications. Although radars have been around since 1904, much work is still spent today designing, building, testing, and implementing new radars and developing new and more powerful radar signal processing techniques. Radar signal processing is still a very active area of research. Nowadays, there has been substantial interest in noise radar over a wide range of applications, such as through wall surveillance, detection, tracking, Doppler estimation, polarimetry, interferometry, ground-penetrating or subsurface profiling, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, foliage penetration imaging, etc. One of the major advantages of the noise radar is its essential immunity from congestion, detection, and external interference. Signal Processing in Noise Waveform Radar brings together comprehensive studies dealing with the emerging technology of noise waveform radar and its signal processing aspects. It discusses the properties, difficulties and potential of noise radar systems, primarily for low-power and short-range civil applications. The contributions of modern signal processing techniques to making noise radar practical are emphasized, and application examples are given. This book covers a diversity of categories in radar signal processing, including radar optimization and system design valuable for both practicing engineers and engineering students.

Book excerpt: Experiments with a CW, random-noise, X-band, radar ranging system are presented, following the technique proposed and used by G.L. Poirier. The correlation signal-processing method differs from that of other noise radars in that no delay lines are required. The signal-processing technique also decorrelates clutter and other interference, including the transmitted signals of other radar systems identical except for their statistically independent noise sources. An application to small-vessel navigation systems is proposed. Other applications in communications and jamming systems are considered. The experiments verify a ranging accuracy of 1.45 meters at a range of 154 meters. The range capability extends from a minimum of 30 meters to the radar horizon at 19,000 meters in the system constructed. The minimum range and accuracy capabilities exceed those of existing pulsed radars installed in small craft. Possible solid-state implementations using currently available devices are outlined. Proposals for future experiments are made, including shortening of minimum range by increasing transmitted bandwidth, and increasing accuracy by refinement of the laboratory model. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Noise Reduction: Methods, Applications and Technology, the authors open with an overview of image denoising approaches. The review covers additive and multiplicative noise reduction methods in the spatial, frequency and wavelet domains, as well as their applications. Finally, experimental qualitative and quantitative evaluations on synthetic and real images corrupted by noise of different distributions are presented and discussed. Then next chapter begins with introduction to multiple camera systems: their usage, structure, hardware and applications. Some examples of existing systems are be presented along with quantitative comparison of parameters like: sensor resolution, technology, frame rate, shutter-related features, need and means for temporal synchronization. Next, optical phase induced interference noise (PIIN) in a sensor network is reduced by using optical phase modulation in both a SCOS and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), and strain induced noise on the optical fiber sensor is reduced using a differential sensor setup called a push-pull SCOS. Phase modulation and differentiation are then combined to allow for simultaneous noise reduction from different noise sources and allow for optical sensing of electric fields in harsh environments. Additionally, the signal processing approaches that exploit the spatial and temporal-spectral characteristics of the flaw echo and noise for enhanced defect detection and noise reduction in ultrasonic NDE are presented. Results from simulation studies and experiments on the real industrial samples are presented to evaluate the techniques, and demonstrate their robustness and advantages over the classical methods--

Book excerpt: The proliferation of HF radar systems for ocean remote sensing and maritime surveillance continues apace, with hundreds of such radars now deployed around the world. The overwhelming majority of these radars operate in the conventional monostatic configuration, with the transmitting and receiving systems collocated or closely spaced; this simple geometry has obvious advantages in terms of cost, siting requirements, communications, maintenance, signal processing, and echo interpretation, and it has been adopted by HF radars exploiting line-of-sight, surface wave, and skywave propagation modalities. All these considerations notwithstanding, in some circumstances there can be compelling reasons to implement bistatic configurations, defined as geometries in which the separation between transmitter and receiver is comparable with the range to the zones being interrogated. Factors that can drive this decision include energy budget, desire to exploit hybrid propagation modes, scattering characteristics of the targets of interest, properties of the clutter, survivability, and covertness. This book, a compilation of papers by leading researchers in the field, offers a panoramic account of the state of the art in bistatic HF radar. Topics covered include system design, HF propagation and scattering, signal processing, echo interpretation, and applications in the maritime domain. Supported with extensive references to the literature, this book should serve as an essential source for practitioners keen to expand the capabilities of their HF radar systems.
