Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the 4th edition of the Atlas of Nuclear Cardiology is to provide physicians and students in cardiology, radiology, and nuclear medicine who want the latest information in the field of cardiovascular nuclear medicine up-to-date and comprehensive information on advances in instrumentation, radiotracers, protocols, and clinical studies. Unlike other books that are narrow in their scope of either technology and technique or clinical studies, the 4th edition of the Atlas will present diagnostic algorithms and schematic diagrams integrated with nuclear cardiology procedures generously interspersed with color illustrations to emphasize key concepts in cardiovascular physiology, pathology, and metabolism relevant for the clinical practice of cardiology. The atlas emphasizes today’s most current information, meeting the requirements for those who will be using the book as a reference source for certifying or re-certifying in cardiology, nuclear cardiology, nuclear medicine or radiology. Hybrid PET/CT and SPECT/CT represent new technologies that were introduced recently in clinical medicine and are evolving rapidly with several improvements in instrumentation, imaging procedures as well as in clinical trials that support the expanded role of these technologies in clinical practice. As such, an updated 4th edition of the Atlas is critical in order for the clinicians remain current with the imaging field and maintain their skills. Imaging protocols with the se technologies have to be updated and/or expanded in order to acquire high quality images at a reduced radiation burden to the patient while advancing the application of these techniques for more advanced disease detection. Accordingly, beyond significantly updating the chapters from the 3rd edition, 2 new chapters will be introduced in the 4th edition, which reflects the expanded clinical applications of the technologies in the past 3 years. The new chapters are as follows: "Hybrid SPECT/CT and PET/CT Imaging" and a dedicated chapter on "Radiation Safety and Exposure: Clinical Decision-Making and the Risk-Benefit Ratio". Chapter 7 from the 3rd edition will be deleted. The updated Atlas will serve as a reference source for all cardiologists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians interested in the most up-to-date approaches to noninvasive diagnostic cardiovascular nuclear imaging techniques for the evaluation of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease as well as non-coronary heart disease. It will also serve as a ready reference textbook for medical students and residents interested in the practice of cardiovascular medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers relevant concepts in nuclear cardiology, combining imaging techniques and clinical data to do so. Today, nuclear cardiology is a worldwide discipline connected to the broader field of cardiovascular imaging. The combination of clinical aspects (symptoms, medications, previous cardiac procedures), ancillary exams and nuclear images is key to decision-making in clinical practice. Thus, a book on this topic is essential to provide better outcomes for cardiology patients. The chapters cover a comprehensive range of topics in current cardiology practice, such as ambulatory patients, patients in emergency settings, patients after complex cardiac procedures, and patients during and after the use of cancer therapies that are potentially toxic for the heart (cardio-oncology). As such, multiple clinical scenarios are also presented: patients with suspected coronary disease, patients with heart failure of unknown origin, patients with acute chest pain in the emergency department, patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, patients with complications of the left ventricular assist device, etc. Furthermore, the book describes nuclear cardiology procedures and techniques, discusses the main clinical indications and scenarios for each procedure, presents new technological advances in the field (machine learning and artificial intelligence tools), and mentions the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide and videos for various medical professionals, especially cardiologists and nuclear physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear cardiac imaging is the diagnostic technique of using radiology and chemical markers to track cardiac performance. These imaging studies provide a wide range of information about the heart, including how much the heart contracts, the amount of blood supply to the heart and whether parts of the heart muscle are alive or dead. This is essential information for cardiologists, and nuclear imaging has become an increasingly important part of the cardiologist's armoury of diagnostic techniques. Iskandrian's text has become a leading book in the field and the fourth edition will continue the tradition. The text is updated throughout to reflect the many advances in the field, and, as a new feature, each chapter concludes with a question and answer session on important and difficult clinical issues.

Book excerpt: In recent years there have been tremendous advances in cardiac imaging techniques covering the complete spectrum from echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, magnetic resonance imaging to contrast angiography. With respect to these noninvasive and invasive cardiac imaging modalities, marked technological developments have allowed the cardiologist to visualize the myocardium in a far more refined manner than conventional imaging was capable of. Echocardiography has extended its domain with intravascular ultrasound, cardiovascular nuclear imaging has added positron emission tomography to its line of research, magnetic resonance imaging has been broadened with magnetic resonance angiography and spectroscopy, and finally contrast angiograp hy has widened its scope with excellent quantitation programs. For all these imaging modalities it is true that the application of dedicated quantitative analytic software packages enables the evaluation of the imaging studies in a more accurate, reliable, and reproducible manner. It goes without saying that these extensions and achievements have resulted in improved diagnostics and subsequently in improved patient care. Particularly in patients with ischemic heart disease, major progress has been made to detect coronary artery disease in an early phase of the disease process, to follow the atherosclerotic changes in the coronary arteries, to establish the functional and metabolic consequences of the luminal obstructions, and to accurately assess the results of interventional therapy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular nuclear medicine emerged 15 years ago as a new noninvasive technique for the detection of human cardiac disease. It arised from the fields of nuclear medicine and cardiology and the cooperation of both specialties has been very productive. At present, nuclear cardiology techniques belong to the routine armamentarium of the clinical cardiologist. Results obtained by perfusion markers, metabolic tracers, and radionuclide angiography have shown to have important impact on patient management. Although exercise electrocardiography and echocar diography yield the large bulk of necessary data in the cardiac patient, nuclear cardiology provides important data that go far beyond the results obtained by the standard procedures. Magnetic resonance imaging is a relative newcomer in cardio logy and has still to prove its value in clinical cardiology . Yet, initial results have been encouraging both in congenital heart disease and in coronary artery disease. This book is based on 16 review publications that have been written throughout the period of 1985 till present time. Most chapters have been published in the period 1989 until 1991; the preceding review papers have been updated as much as possible. Furthermore, Chapter 15 entitled" What's new in cardiac imaging" has been espe cially written for this book. The Chapters 9, 11 and 13 have been recently written and have not been published yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade many significant advances have been made in the in vivo diagnosis of disease. An area of partic ular success has been the application of nuclear medical procedures to the detection of cardiac disease. Not only is it possible to detect infarction or ischemia by scintigraphic techniques but by the use of labelled metabol ites and analogues of potassium the viability of myocardial tissue can be evaluated. The efficiency of the heart pump can be calculated and wall motility observed in one simple proce dure. The use of ultra short life radionuclides has made the evaluation of rapid changes in myocardial function feasible. Altogether a broad and impressive diagnostic package. In this volume up-to-date reviews of all of the available techniques have been collected including methods which are still in the development phase. There is an inherent emphasis on European experience in Nuclear Cardiology which is then placed in context with world wide experience in the field. This volume will be of interest to all concerned with cardiac diseases and we hope that it will serve to stimulate further developments in the future. H.J. Biersack, Bonn P.H.
